Washington, D. Oct. ‘24, 1 STD.
The New York Sun, an excellent
newspaper, hut a kind of cowboy in pol
itics, is giving advice to both parties
as to their selection of Presidential can
didates. Its latest choice lor the Dem
ocrats is < J fill. Hancock. The mention
ot good men and Hancock is such a man
does no harm and may do much good.
it is bail policy besides being unjust,
to say that any one of the statesmen who
have been mentioned for the office will
not be chosen, hut every addition of a
paper, name to the list of candidates i
a benefit. One reason for the sugges-.
tion of Hancock is doubtless his suppos
ed availability because of his splendid
military record. This, however, is a
source of weakness as well as strenth.
The people arc not realy fond <>f mil
itary candidates for the Picaodciicy.
Washington, .Jackson, and Taylor were
chosen, but every intelligent reader
knows that two of them, besides having
exceptionally brilliant military records
had other qualities giving them great
popular s r nglit. Even Jacksons New
Orleans achievement and other military
service did not secure his election when
first nominated, It may be set down
as truth that military men have been
made Presidents only as a kind of peo
ple protest againts the rule of scheming
politicians. It cannot bo said now that
such a protest is natural or necesary.
We have “too much military’’ rather
than not enough, Hancock is not, there
fore, I think, specially availabls because
of bis military record. Blithe is one
of the men to be seriously thought of
when a nomination comes to be made
like many distinguished Estreu and
West re li statesmen who have lunge been
in the public service and who also would
adorn the office.
Mr. Stilson Hutchins, editor of the
Washington Post, goes to New llamd
shire in the eourccof a few weeks to take
charge of a daily paper in that State.
He is a w riter of readiness and farce
and will he a gteat gain to journalism
in the Estren States.
That splendid military company, the
gate City guards, have completed their
northen tour which began at Wash
ington and are now on their wav home,
•They seem to have made everywhere
the same favorable impression as in this
City. *
Reports received at the war dept, last
night make it probable that the Indian
troubles will he more extensive than at
first though it is a pity in such an
emergency that the Interior dept, has
any connection whatever with the
Indians, or il such connection be neces
sary, that a man of abstractions, like
Schurz, instead of a man of office, is at
tbe bead of the Dcpaetmcnt. many
will regret the. transfer, but 1 have little
doubt that the Indian Bureau will at
the next scsion of Congress be turned
over to the War Department.

The Savannah news in speakrlig < t
the late election in Ohio and lowa says.
It is uc lively a surprise to learn that
the Ohio and lowa (1 reenh, ackers ot
Republican antecedents voted the Repub
lican ticket almost solidly iu last weeks
election in those States, and that the
Greenback votes were cast almost cx
elusivelv by men of Democratic antece
dents. It is not anew story. The
same has been true in almost every in
stance of all third party movements
that have been originated since the Re
publican party began its retrograde
march in 1574. Thu Republicans in
variably return to their party on election
day, while most of the wandering Dem
ocrats remain true to their pledges.
How much longer can designing Re
publican managers play these little
games upon Democratic v< tors?
New Woitns.—While many words
once in common use are now neailv ob
solete, few persons are aware how large
a number of new words are constantly
coining into our language. The Sup
plement of the new edition of Webster’s
Unabridged Dictionary, recentiy issued
contains among other attractive fcaturs,
an addition of over 4600 New Wolds j
and Meanings, and yet it is but a few
years since a general revision was m.l’lc
and great care taken to insert all tbe
words then properly belonging to tbe
English Language. Where these words
come from ana what they are, if# a sup
prise to persons who have not- examined
them. That they have not been hastily
compiled is evidenced by the accuracy
of and careful study given to their etv
niology and definitions.

\ Young Renf. in Trouble.
A young lady gave “her young man’’
a beautifully worked pair of slippers, and
he acknowledged the present by sending
her his picture encd in a handsome
frame.
He wrote a note to send with it, and
at the same time replied angrily to an
oft-repeat,-rd dun for an unpaid for suit
of clothes. He gave a boy ten cents to
deliver the package ntH notes, giving
explicit directions as to the destination
el each. It was a boy with freckled
face and lie discharged his errand in a
maimer that should give hiin_a uielic in
the temple of fame.
r J he young lady received a note in her
adored one’s hand-writing, and Hew to
her room to devour its contents. She
opened the missive with eager fingers
and read—
“l m getting tired of yoni everlasting
attentions. 1 lie suit is about worn out
already. Please go to thundei,”
And the tailor was struck utterly
dumb when lie opened a pared and dis
covered the picture ofhis delinquent cus
tomer, with a note that said—
“\\ hen you gaze upon these features
think how much J owe you.”

he was very ostentatiously shoved off the

Hair Vigor,
For restoring Cray Hair lu
its natural Vitality and Color.
A dressing

t^\vG: s fectual fur pr*-
serving tha
Lair. Faded or
with the gloss and freshness of youth.
Thin hair is thickened, falling hair
checked, and baldness often, though
not always, cured by its use. Noth
ing can restore tho hair where the
follicles are destroyed, or the gland*
atrophied and decayed. But such as
remain can be saved for usefulness
by this application. Instead of foul
ing the hair with a pasty sediment, it
will keep it clean and vigorous. It*
occasional use will prevent the hair
from turning gray or falling off, and
consequently prevent baldness. Free
from those deleterious substances
which make somo preparations dan
gerous, and injurious to the hair, the
Vigor can only benefit but not harm
1 1. If wanted merely for a
HAIR DRESSING,
nothing else can be found so desir
able. Containing neither oil nor
dye, it does not soil white cambric,
and yet lasts long on the hair, giving
it a rich, glossy lustre and a grateful
perfume.
