4 Happiness. —What is earthly happiness ? I that phantom of which we hear so much, and I see so little ; whose promises are constant}’ I ly given and constantly broken, but as con stantly bel'eved ; that cheats us with the sound instead of tlie substance, and with tlie blossom instead of the fruit. Like Juno, she is a ; goddess in pursuit, but* cloud in possession ; | deified by those who cannot enjoy her, and des- ; plsed by those who can. Anticipation is her | herald, but Disappointment is her companion ; the first addresses itself to our imagination, ; that would believe, but the latter to our expe rience, that must. Happiness, that grand j mistress of the ceremonies in the dance of life, impels us through all its mazes and me anderings, but leads none of us by the same ' route. Aristippus pursued her in pleasure,; Socrates in wisdom, and Epicurus in both ;' she received the attentions of each, but be stowed her endearments on neither; although I like some other gallanta, they all boasted of more favors than they had received. Warned i by their failure, the stoic adopted a most pa radoxical mode of preferring his suit; he I thought, by slandering, to woo her; by shun ning, to win her ; and proudly presumed, that by fleeing tier, she would turn and follow him. She is deceitful as the calm that precedes the hurricane; smooth as the water on the verge of the cataract; and beautiful as the rainbow, that smiling daughter of the storm; but, like the mirage in the desert, she tantalizes us with a delusion that distance creates, and that contiguity destroys. Yet, when unsought, she is often found, and when unexpected, often obtained; while those who seek for her the most diligently, fail the most, because they seek her where she is not. Anthony sought her in love; Brutus in glory; Cmaar in doaii nion: the first found disgrace, the second dis gust, the last ingratitude, and each destruction. To some she is more kind, but no less cruel; she hands them her cup, and they drink eVen to stupefaction, until they doubt whether they are men with Philip, or dream that they aro gods with Alexander. On some she smiles as on Napoleen, with an aspect more bewitch inglhan an Italian sun; but it is only to make bar frown the more terrible, and by one shoit caress to embitter the pangs of separation.— Yet is she, by universal homage and consent, • queen; and the passions are the vassal lords that crowd her court, await her mandate, and move at her control. But, like other mighty sovereigns, she is so surrounded by her envoys, her officers, and her ministers of state, that it is extremely difficult to be admit ted to her presence-chamber or to have any immediate communication with herself. Am bition, Avarice, Love, Revenge, all these seek her, and her alone; alas 1 they are neither presented to her, nor will she oome to them.— She despatches, however, her envoys Unto them—mean and poor representatives of their queen. To Ambition, she sends power; to Avarice wealth; to Love, jealousy; to Re vengo, remorse ; alas ! what are these, but so many other names for vexation or disappoint ment. Neither is she to be won by flatters- or by bribes; she is to bo gained by waging war against her enemies much sooner than by pay ing any particular court to herself. Those that conquor her adversaries, will find that they need not go to her, for she will cotne unto them. None bid so high for her as kings; few are more willing, none more able, to purchase her alliance at the fullest price- ®ul she has no more respect for kintf« than for their subjects: she mocks tlium'fndeetf with the empty show of a by sending to their palaces all her -aqrfupage, her pomp, and her train, but she comes not herself. What detains her ! She is travelling incognita to keep a private assig nation with Contentment, and to partake of a tete a tete and a dinner of herbs in a cottage. Hear then, mighty queen 1 what sovereigns seldom hear, the words of soberness aad truth. I neither despise thee too little, nor desire thee too much ; for thou wieldest Jan earthly scep tre, and thy gifts cannot exceed thy 'dominion. Like other potentates, thou also art a creature of circumstance, and an ephemeris ot Time. Like other potentates, thou also, when stripped es thy auxiliaries, art no longer competent even to thine own subsistence; nay, thou canst not even stand by thyself. Unsupported by Content on the one band and Health on tlie ether, thou falleat an unwisldly and bloated to the ground.-—Colton. and Pabis Fashions fob Octobbx. Dinner and ie-door dress for the country. — Jnpon of white cambric muslin, with a rich and deep border of needlework of an epen pattern. Over this jupon is worn an open dress of figured silk, pale lemon color and white.— The corsage high, but opening about half way down the front ol the bosom in a point.— Sleeves demi-long, and rather wide at the low er part; slit open, and the opening confined by lacing. The fronts of this open dress are or ■ainented with a triple row of quilled ribbon of the color of the silk, and the ends of the sleeves are edged with a double row of the same quilled ribbon. Loose under-sleeves of white muslin, richly ornamented with needle work, and slightly gathered up in the inside of the arm. A chemisette of worked muslin, with a small turnover collar, edged with lace •r needlework. Head dress—a small cap of Brussels lace, trimmed with bows of ribbon, •f three different colors, namely : lemon, ee rise and blue. On one wrist is worn a brace let, consisting of a double row of gold chain fastened by a padlock. Round the waist a silk cord and tassels of the color of the dress. Slippers of lemon-colored satin, the fronts embroidered with flowers in variegated silks Intermingled with gold and silver. Morning Dress.—Robe of foulard ; a rich chintz pattern on a straw-colored ground. A pardessus of the same material as the dress, trimmed with a fronco of green sarsanet rib bon. The perdesaua is made high at the back, and sloping to a point In front of the waist, where it dees not quite close. The skirt, which descends about a quarter of a yard be low the waist, has two slits in front, which are edged with a ribbon fronce. Under the par dessus is worn a chemisette of drawn or plait ed muslin. It Is square in front of the bosom, and is edged with rows ot needlework or lace iasertion, finished with narrow vandyked edg ing. In front of the bosom are three bows of green ribbon, the lower one having long streaming ends. Demi-long sleeves, rather wide at the ends, and edged with a ironce of green ribbon. Cap of white tulle, trimmed with rows of ribbon striped in various brilliant hues. Full under-sleeves of plain white mus lin, ike fullness gathered on a worked wrist laud. ________ BtiiDtro at the Noes.—Dr. Samuel R. Smith, of Tompkinsville, Staten Island, New- York, communicated to the Boston Medical Journal a method of stopping bleedings at the nose, which he learned of an old shipmaster. Mis process was to roll up a piece of paper and place it under the upper lip. Dr. Smith slopped bleeding which had continued four davs, by tying a knot in a bandage, and apply ing it on the upper lip, and tying the bandage rouud the head. The rationale of this treat ment is, the pressure at the point mentioned oompresses the artery furnishing the blood. A few things to Avoid.—A bottle of wine at a public dinner. A short eut when you are in a hurry. Walking between tw:> umbrellas on a rainy day. “Just another glass before you go.” Going to church without a shilling. Being the mediator of a qnarrel between a man and his wife. And lastly, taking a new hat to an evening party. Nature sometimes makes a fool; but a cox aenib is always of his own making. .Beautiful Allegory.—A basso-relievoon one of the sarcophagi at Pompeii, represents a very happy allegory of the flight of the immor tal soul from the fiail bark ol mortality. A ship ba* returned from her voyage—she has reached her port—the helmsman has relin quished the helm—the attendant genii, whom we may suppose to represent the ordinary faculties of human sense, feeling, perception, &c., are going aloft to turl the sails ; and the picturesque conception happily concludes, as a bird soars away, with expanded wings, from the mast head—the beautiful emblem of the soul steering direct to heaven.
