■BUG WITH IHE RECORDER
With the picture of Monsieur Cal
mette staring; from the front page,
in mute witness to the fate awaiting
unwary Journalists, one must be par

ative this morning. Who knows but
a potential and promising Madame
Cailiaux may be lurking in the by
ways of Augusta, only waiting to he
aroused. Henceforward all married
men will be strictly barred from this
column.
Among a number of men who came
up for selling soft drinks without a
license, were several who were pre
sumed to be bachelors or widowers
from the state of their garments—
which were all carefully mended,
pressed, and with buttons that match
ed. But some of these may have been
only newly wed, so that one cannot
be too careful.
Each gentleman had a different
ami convincing excuse to explain his
lack of a license.
At the end came up one gentleman
who said;
"I just neglected to gpt or" Tnd"°
The Officer, here, told me about ten
days ago I'd have to have one, but 1

“Well," said Judge Irvin. “I don't
think that's much of an excuse, I must
say.”
Yet there was something about that
answer that was a]>pealing—there
was an unusual quality, a calm aenae
of satisfaction about it which had al
most never before been felt.
It was the Glorious, Golden Truth.
And such veneration' dtd It inspire
that a $5 sentence was suspended to
two.
Mose Barkley, colored, was next
brought forward.
"What are you charged with?” ask
ed the judge, looking back and forth
in the book.
"I don't know. boss. I think dey
said it was Kragrancy."
"Ah. yes. Here wc are! Charged
with violating the fiß9tti section of
the code. Guilty or not guilty?"
Moae held up his left hand and said
he was guilty.
“Idling and loafing." said Officer

Mose was very much put out and
began reviewing how on various, nay
numerous occasions, he had held po
sitions and earned a living. Eor in

he went to sleep and the horse wan

but afterwards proved his innocence
in open court. There were innumer
