Abram, Negro Prisoner, After
Latter Had Viciously Attack

Street police barracks, waa shot and
instantly killed at I o'clock this morn
ing hy Call Officer I) It Morgan when

curred after a desperate struggle be-
I tween the two In the presence of sev
eral prisoners in nearby cells The
whom ins created considerable excite
ment among the occupants of the
cells
For Investigation.
Abram was sent to the pollee sta
tion Sunday for investigation, the tie
gro having been suspected of break
ing the law. Until late last night
the prisoner remained In Cell No 1
He attacked a prisoner In the cell
with him without, cause and was re
moved to a cell to himself, Cell No. 6.
A window In this cell opens into a
small lot where there la a great deal
.if rubbish. The window Is barred,
and screened with heavy wire, hut
Abram made a hole In the wire screen
sufficient to pull a piece of good sized
wire Into the cell. Jle twisted the
wire Into a weapon, and, after rath
Ing Officer Morgan and getting him
to open the door, It was with this and
hla teeth he attacked him The negro
got possession of the policeman's club
in the fight and, according to eye
witnesses, was getting the better of
the officer when the fatal shot waa
fired. The one bullet took effect Just ;
one Inch over the left nipple.

forcement of the Increased rates.

The Colonel With Another
Part of Expedition, Wasn’t
On Hand at Mishap.
New York.—All feeling of anxiety re
garding the safety of Col. Theodore
Roosevelt, who is In the Jungle In
Rra7.il, has been removed by additional
advices today from Anthony Fiala,
whose party lost thpir equipment In
the Rapids of the Devil in the Papa
galo river.
Fiala reported the colonel was In
good health and was not with the
party that met with the mishap. With
another jiart of the expedition, Mr.
Roosevelt is exploring the Rio Dluvlta,
or River of Doubt, a hitherto unex
plored stream. Fiala says Colonel
Roosevelt will reach Manaos early In
April, the point marking the end ol
the expedition.
From there the former president will
slart for Madrid to attend the wedding
of his son. Kermit.
Fiala states that he lost two canoes
loaded with food and equipment, but
that his party of eight men were sale.

velt is reported to have met with some
mishap in the wilds of the South Amer
ican jungle, Ills sister, Mrs. lXmglas
Robinson, a prominent New York so

When shown the dispatches telling
how the Roosevelt party had "loot

son said she believed they would have
heard of it direct by this time If any

sonally, and that she was not much

Mrs. Robinson went down on Deca
tur street yesterday to see Judge
Broyles and the recorder's court, the

York. After watching with sympa

esses, she turned to Judge Broyles and
remarked thsat It was "as good as a
minstrel show."
"1 have always wanted to see a
sonthern police court," she said, "to
get a more Intimate glimpse of the
southern darkey, and I won’t soon
forget my experiences of today.”

which John Shrank attempted to kill
Colonel Roosevelt in Milwaukee, in
October, 1912. will be presnted to Mr.
Roosevelt, together with five cart
ridges which remained in the weapon
when it was seized

wrested the revolver from Shrank, to
day asked Judge A. 0. Backus, before
whom Shrank was tried, for the fire
arm.
Judge Backus granted the request

Thought Judge Had Ruled
He Wasn't a White Man
Charleston, 8. C—Dr. H. A. El
Kourle, of Birmingham, Ala., appear
ed before Judge Smith in the United
States district court this afternoon for
a hearing concerning a decision ren
dered by Judge Smith some weeks
ago In refusing naturalization to a Sy
rian. on the grounds that he was not
a "free white man within the mean
ing of the statute of 1790.”
Dr. El Kourle labored tinder the im
pression that Judge Smith had ruled
that the Syrian is not a white man|
His Impression was soon corrected.
Syrians all over the country are in-*
forested In this decision, which may
he taken to the United States supreme
court. Judge Smith will re-open the
case, however, on April 6.
