works bond issue was that Augusta
latior would be employed in building
the levee, the hospitals and the wa
terworks This is said to have been
brought out In a conference between
local labor men and the then mayor.
Mr. Thomas Barrett, City Engineer
Wingfield, Dr las. It Littleton, of
the hospital committee, and others.
This is said to be the first com
plaint that has been made in the hos
pital work uml it is probable that If
McDaniel had not failed there would
not have been any complaint register
ed now, since McDaniel Is a local
tnau and it is presumed that he would
have employed local labor.
The labor men argue that they vote
bond* to tax themselves greater than
thc> are now being taxed In order
to earn out improvements for the
City and it is the rudest kind of a
Joke for the money which they help
to raise to be given to out-of-town
labor, while they have a great many
of their own number now In Augusta
out of work, painters walking the
streets without employment.
U Is hoped that the matter of the
painters will he a, eedlly corrected and
that that there xvlll he no further
cause for complaint.

Following an attempt to wreck the
afternoon train to Edgefield, Sheriff
Howard and Rural Policeman Sam

arrested a little negro named Sam
Jefferson, about eleven years old. The
little negro was turned over to Hen
dersons, ntttorneys for the Southern
Railway at Aiken and this morning he
was released owing to his age. with
the request that he be given a severe
whipping by hts parents.
It seems that the little negro moved
to this county some time ago and as
he had never seen a train wreck he
thought that he would cause one. He
told the officers that he put the crooss
tles on the track Just to see the train
