MESSRS. NIXON AND ROOKS
OUT FOR RE ELECTION
Two County Commissioners
Are Standing on Their Rec
ords as Commissioners.
In announcing that they are candi
dates to succeed themselves on the
county commission, Mr. O. H. Nixon
and Mr. A. H. Rooks, the former
chairman of tile rommtsalon, state
that they are running solely on their
past record.
The date of the Richmond county
primary Is May 15th; time for regis
tration ends npxt week.
Messrs. Nixon atid Rooks are the
only members now on the board who
have been there since Its organiza
tion. These gentlemen's friends con
sider ns the Most noteworthy of their
achievements the road building In
this county, as one who uses the
country roads to any extent will
vouch for the statement that Rich
mond has better roads than any
county In this section of the state.
Terra cotta cross-road drains have
been put in and the old decaying
wooden ones torn out and In danger
ous places the deep aide ditches have
been filled In and the piping Installed
for tile drain. Road building Is first
of all one of the chief duties of the
county commission.
It Is also pointed out that Mr. Nixon
lias been chulrnmn for the past fif
teen months nnd tt has been largely
through his efforts that a 140,000 slice
has been cut out of the county debt.
Under the present policy of the board
the county has lirlght prospects of
having its entire debt cleared up In
two years and thus save 310,000 an
nually that Is now paid In Interest.
It Is also significant to note, say
friends of Messrs. Nixon said Rooks,
that last year under tho supervision
of Mr. Nixon, os chairman of the
board, und Mr. Rooks, as chairman of
the roads committee, which does the
bulk of the spending, the county lived
within its appropriation by 311,000.
Thl* amount was paid on the old/flebt.
EXCELLENT MEETING OF
GREENE ST. CHURCH
•
More interest was manifested last
night at the meeting which Is In pro
gress at the Greene Street Presby
terian church than at any time since
the beginning of the series. A pro
found Impression was made by the ser
mon. the subject of which was: - "The
Devil," the discussion was not fanciful
hut scriptural at every point. He Is
represented as being u great super
human personality, originally the
highest ereateil being of heaven, but
fallen thro' insubordination and trea
son against God In his unholy ambi
tion to be a rival dlety. Dr. Coman
showed that his origin was the same
as every thing else, created by God.
But he made himself a devil by his
own sin. He Is. according to Christ's
description,# "The Prince of this
World.” also called "The God of this
World " He Is in full control of the
corrupt politics, the commercial greed,
the social revelry, the Intellectual
scepticism, and has even entered the
church with Is corrupting Influences.
The evangelist showed thnt the only
protection Is the armor of God. Since
this awful presence Is so described In
the word of God. and Is so visible In
the world around, we should flee to
Christ for refuge and salvation from
his power.
The meeting tonight will begin with
the song service at 8 o'clock. The
singing has been Inspiring; and the
orchestral accompaniment has added
greatly to the music.
