PILOTS DON’T HAVE
TO BE GOOD PLAYERS
Connie Mack and Hank O’Day
Are Put Forth to Clinch
Statemtnt Made Above.
Scranton, Pa. —That playing ability
ia not necessary in order to be a good
manager of a baseball team has oft
en been asserted and now Connie
Mark and Hank O’Day are put forth
as shining examples to prove the con
tention.
Connie Mack was only a mediocre
catcher during his activities behind
the bat. Now he is considered the
greatest leader in the game, if not the
premier manager in the history of the
National game.
Hank O'Day, as a pitcher, was a
pretty good bareball manager.
Connie and the new leader of the
once famous Cl-icago Cubs were bat
tery mates many years ago. As a bat
tery there was nothing in the make
up to sump them as a pair noted for
genius V>r prowess. As a matter of
fact when O’Day and Mack were due
for the heavy work, the opposition
had little to worry about. The last
> ear Hank and Connie were together
was with the Washington club in
1889.
They acted as the Senator's bnt
etry just three times, and cr. every
occasion that they worked the Sen.'-
tors were beaten. Following is the
result of the games that the O’Day-
Mack battery figured in twenty-five
years ago:
April 29th, 1889, New York, 4;
Washington, 2: Crane-Brown and
O’Day-Mack. The Giants won In the
ninth Inning. Connie made four er
rors and Hank one.

Players In their daily workouts, that
Manager Brouthers will have a splen
did team. Brouthers has gone ahead
quietly and secured an aggregation
ball players which will at least make a
creditable showing in the coming race
for the flag and the team should get
the cordial support of Augusta fans.
The team has been gotten together
economicaly and the club's affairs are
oelng conducted with such economy
as I* consistent with getting good re
sults. There is no money being
thrown away. A great many people
subscribed to the baseball fund who
didn't pay. The association has beci
up against it, so to speak, from th
start. And it does seem that the peo
ple of Augusta should Rive their most
cordial support this season to the men
who have made it possible to get base
ball again-in Augusta. So every one
who can, should buy a season ticket
and those who can't should go to all
the games possible.
President Kalbfleisch is anxious for
the ladies to send in suggestions
names for the team as the matter must
be closed up this week.
