PASTOR DU BOSE
ANSWERS IDEM
Former Augusta Minister Re
plies in Pulpit to Critics on
Locker Clubs Stand.
Atlanta, Ga. —Dr. H. M. Dußose, pas
tor of the First Methodist church and
one of the leaders in the prohibition
ranks, made his answer to the stew
ards of the church, who at a meet
ing on last Thursday night are said
to have sought to limit his activi
ties against the locker clubs, particu
larly as they affected members of the
church who were also members of the
clubs.
In plain language the pastor told his
congregation Hunday that It was the
duty of the gospel to rebuke the spirit
of sins wherever it was found, in hitrh
places or in low. in "convict camps or
In social clubs."
The Stewards' Meeting.
At the meeting Thursday night reso
lutions were passed by the stewards,
which, it is said, pointed out that
membership in reputable clubs was
not in any way discreditable, and vig
orous objection Is said to have been
voiced against any effort on the part
of the pastor or anybody else to cre
ate feeling against those members
who belonged to clubs by means of
newspaper criticism or otherwise.
To this Dr. Dußose replied in an in
terview that the meeting would not
have the slightest effect on any of his
activities. "I shall insist that mem
bership In locker dubs Is not consis
tent with the spirit of Christianity.,"
he said, "and I shall seek to have the
members of my church, and of other
churches so far as I am able, sever
their relationship with these clubs.”
The meeting of the stewards and the
statement or the pustor created
interest, in the city and especially 'Jp
tin church, and there was a large con
gregation present, despite the weath
er, on Sunday night to hear his ad
dress.
Or. Dußose’s Reply.
In part ho said:
“Text: ‘Ami there’ was a man in
the synagogue with an unclean spirit;
an ihe cried out: I.et us alone! What
have we to do with thee, thou Jesus
of Nasareth ?'—Mark 1:24.
"Capernaum was the scene of njnny
of the miracles and sayings of Jesus;
but its sins and follies kept it from
accepting the truth of the gospel. In
the synagogue at Capernaum Jesus
found a man with an unclean spirit.
This evil spirit was a type and out
put of the life of Capernaum, which
was godless, hypocritical and sensual,
a true reflection of the sinful domi
nance of the Herodlan rule.
"The man with the unclean spirit
was tin* victim of some sensual habit,
likely that of hnsheesh, or Indian
hemp drug, of which Capernaum was
distributing point in Syria. The man
of the tombs in (ladura was likely a
victim of the same drug.
"When the unclean spirit perceived
the presence of Jesus, the Healer, it
cried out. The English version reads.
I.et us alone,' but the Greek may be
read: ‘Hold there!' 'Advance no step
nearer!' or 'Stay on your own ground!'
Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s,
and unto God what is God’s;' I am
the product of Caesar's license sys
tem, even Christ has no right to in
terfere with me.
"The prayer and cry of sin Is to be
let alone. Political corruption, the
drink business in every form, high or
low corrupt devices In morals and
every manner of lawlessness want to
he 'let alone;' and when the gospel
util Is sounded against them they cry.
Hold! Stay on your own ground,'
'Dare not invade Caesar’s domain.'
‘This is because sin Is supremely
selfish; because sin is Insensate and
unreasoning, and because It fenrs the
judgment of God. Unclean and godless
society does not want to be saved; it
does not want to be saved.
"If this prayer of the spirit of tin -
cleanness and appetite were answered,
what would happen? Human souls
would be loft In hopeloss hondnge, a
festering sore would he left in the
heart of the world, and God would be
forever dishonored. '
"No, the gospel must rebuke the
spirit of sin In high places ever: In
convict camps and In social clubs alike.
There is one salvation for a sinful man
and a sinful society, nnd that is the
gospel of truth and power.’’

GRAND JURY ON
EEO FRANK CASE
Reported That Body is Inves
tigating Charges of Perjury
Against Recanting Witnesses.
Atlanta, Ga. —The grand Jury, It is
reported, is planning to indict for per
jury several Frank trial witnesses who
lept'.dlated their testimony on the wit
ness staid A secret conference was
held ten days ago with Solicitor Dor
sey at which the matter was deferred
pending developments.
Action will not be taken, however,
for some time, It Is said. Solicitor
Dorsey, It Is stated, does not want to
put the prosecution In the attitude of
seeking to deter witnesses by tear of
prosecution.
Dorsey, however, will have nothing
to say on the situation. He will
neither deny or affirm the news that
leaked out Monday that he had been
before the grand Jury In consultation
over the Frank case.
A big surprise Is expected in the
fight of the prosecution Wednesday
when the re-trial application comes
before. Judge Ben Hill for a hearing.
Attaches to the solicitor general's of
fice freely admit that Mr. Dorsey has
recently come into possession of evi
dence that will be materially helplul
in combatting the new trial motions.
It is reported an affidavit was made
before Mr. Dorsey Monday afternoon
by a young girl witness for the prose
cution, whose name Is withheld. It
is said that she is one of the number
of girl witnesses who have made af
fidavits for the defense denouncing
their testimony,
The solicitor was busy throughout
the day interviewing witnesses and
conferring with detectives from police
headquarters and with private detec
tives of his own staff. Some of the
Investigators who were with Dorsey
Monday were John Black Bass Rosser,
Pat Campbell, John Starnes and others
from Chief Danford’s office. Gay C.
Febuary, secretary to the detective
chief, was also called before the so
licitor. It Is reported that he made
an affidavit.
Detective William J. Burns return
ed to town Monday. lie has not yet
made hie report, and it Is probable
that It will not be submitted until
some time today, w'hen It will supple
ment the re-trlal motion to be submit
ted before Judge 11111. He stated that
he harl solved the mystery, and that
his report would conclusively show
the public the man guilty of Mary
Pluigan s murder. He would not tell
where he had been on his last trip
A. D. Waldo, foreman of the grand
jury, was reluctant to talk to a re
porter for The Constitution Monday
when naked of the Jury's attitude to
ward perjury charges in the Frank
case. He would only state that the
Jury had not taken any action. He
referred the reporter to Solicitor Dor
sey for all Information. Mr. Dorsey,
however, was even more reticent than
the Jury foreman.
"I will, in all probability, however,
take action against those who perjure
themselves In the case,” he stated.
"It would be my duty of office to do
so. Whether it is the Frank case or
any other case, perjury deserves pros
ecution.”
