TO BE CHOSEN

Men’s Library Association to
Meet Friday at 4 P. M.
A successor to the late Mr. Henry W.
Caiv, librarian for the Young Men's Li
brary Association, will be chosen Friday
afternoon at 4 o'clock at a meeting of
the hoard of directors of the associa
tion in the library at S4l Greene street.
New members of the board will be
elected also at this meeting and a full
attendance is requested.
Miss Verdery Most Likely.
There are several lady applicants for
the position of librarian, the one most
spoken of for the place, however, being
Miss Helen V. Verdery, teh assistant li
brarian.

Carr's failing eyesight in his later years
and his physical condition becoming
more feeble, too, attended to all of the
duties of the libarian. She has been with
the library for three years, taking over
tlie more responsible duties only six
months after she came to he library. Hev
friends say that she has done well and is
deserving of being made the librarian.
Moved Library.
A fact that stands out very much in
Miss Verdery's favor, evincing her worth
for the position she now aspires, is that
recently when the library with ts 3.000
odd volumes was transferred from the
old stand, where the Empre building is
now being erected, to the new’ quarters
next door to the Y. M. C. A. building,
she superintended the moving by herself,
rearranged and re-listed nil of the hooks
in their jiroper forms, every one classi
fied, and re-opened the library in two
weeks. Since Miss Verdery has vir
tually been in charge there have been
many new’ subscribers to the association
and a great deal mor« interest is being
taken in thl simportant institution of the
city. It has become a more popular
place, too.

Bound For Savannah, the Er
roll Struck on Hatteras Coast
Last Night in Fog.
Norfolk, Va. —The British steamship
Knoll, from Now York to Savannah, Ga.,
for cargo, first reported as the steamer
Argo which struck on the Hatteras
coast near v regon Inlet during a heavy
fog last night, was today still on the
beach but with favorable weather con
ditions her position was not perilous.
The Erroll struck at high tide l ist night
and it will take a high tide to float her.
One tug was reported standng by the
Erroll today awitlng favorable oppor
tunity to haul on her. The KrroH’s
crew are still aboard, all having refused
offers of Uve-savers to take them off.
The weather conditions on the coast
today were foggy and the wind was
blowing eight miles an hour from the
southwest. The sea was light.
The ErrolPs position on the beach is
one mile south of the Oregon Inlet Life-
Saving Station and about 100 miles
south of Cape Henry.
