NEW YORK COTTON
New cotton market opened
steady today, unchanged to three lower
under overnight selling orders but soon
steadied on covering and some fresh
buying of new crop positions. A few
mav notices were -circulating but seemed
to bring no materia! pressure against the
spot month and the general market was
steady after the call with prices ruling
about one to four net higher.
There was no heavy selling during the
egrly afternoon, but there were steady
small offerings particularly of July, and
prices sold: about two to six points net
lower in the absence of support. Week
end figures were rather bearish.
i"ott(> bliture. closed steady.
The \i X*'ket was very quiet later in
the morning. Moderate reactions fol
lowed the early advance under realizing
hut prices shortly after midday were
strait; and a point or two net higher.

to have been discounted. Opening pr ces

DEFAULT NOTICE
ROCK ISLAND
Official Announcement Made
By N. Y. Stock Exchange.
Frisco„ in Receiver’s Hands.
New York.—The stork exchange today
officially announced the default of semi
annual interest payment on the four per
cent gold bonds of the Chicago, Rock is
land and Pacific Railroad Company and
the general lino 5 per cent bonds of the
St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad
Company.
The Frisco is in the hands of receivers
and the affairs of the Rock Island sys
tem are admittedly precarious. The
prices of both of these issues for some
time past have pointed to suspension of
interest payment and the notice issued
by the exchange was chiefly in keeping
with legal requirements.
It is expected that the report of the
export, Recently engaged by the bond
holders’ committee of the Rock Island
Company will be submitted shortly. On
this report hinges the future financing
of the road.
