NESTS SISTER,
HEJITJJ ill
Mrs. Annie Wilson Howe An
Earnest Promoter of Fresh
Air Art Society.
Pari*.—Mrs Annie 'Wilson Howe,
President Wilson's sister, has become
an earnest promoter of The Fresh Air
Art Society, an International organiza
tion now about ten month* old whose
purpose is to stimulate healthy and
rational ideas in every variety of art,
literature, music, painting and sclup
ture.
Mrs. Howe is one of four honorary
members, the others being the Prin
cess Alexanderine Windisch-Oreate of
Austria; the Karl of Plymouth and
Ixml Windsor. Among the thirty
members arc Auguste Rldon, the
sculptor. Camille Flammarion, the phil
osopher-autronorner; the Countess
Hartenau, who is reputed to do the
most beautiful embroidery and decor
ative work in England
Some notable American members
are Grace George, the I-ouislana nov
elist; Warrington Dawson, the novel
ist of Charleston, S. C.; John Powell,
(he composer, and Alice Stopford
Green, the historian. Dawson and
Powell are the founders of the so
ciety.
Mrs. Howe, who has been living
here tor a year, assisted In organiz
ing interest In France In the princi
pies of the society, Which are a Tol
lows;
We believe in the oneness of life.
We believe in the oneness of art.
We believe in the trinity of ait as
standing for life
Wherefore art is a means, not an
end.
Before the end can he conceived,
life must be understood.
Before life can be understood, its
responsibilities must be acknowledg
ed.
'Chat the end pursued by art's
means may be true, the life which art
represents must be true.
Wherefore life and srt must alike 1
he founded upon conditions of sound
body, nerves, heart and mind.
But srtch a foundation must itself
rest upon the great laws which have
promoted the evolution oT life.
That art may he controlled, it must
contain qualities of reason and of con
struction beneath all forces or sub
tleness of appeal.
That art may not only exist but I
may wax strong in the harmony which
is infinity, It must like. life Itself, I
obey the laws of health whleh combat I
decay.
The great facts of human history
have been those which bespoke the
culminating spirit of race; the great
works of human art have been those
whicn expressed the highest spirit
of their own age.
To acknowledge that exploiters of
superficial emotions or seekers after
sheer eccentricity represent the"spirit
of ou r age, is to pronounce tills age
unworthy to be a link between the
PAhI as we know it and the future as
we have the right to desire It.
Wherefore we declare ourselves for
the art as for the life which rest upon
a respect for nature’s laws in the
fresh air of health and the clear light
of truth.
Evolves a Delicious and
New Edible Mushroom
Paris. —Professor Matruchot, the
eminent French : otanist. lias suc
ceeded in evolving a new and delic
ious mushroom It has been cultivat
ed from the wild fungi which grow
in the woods and only appear in the
late autumn months A number were
planted in the vast cellars of the
Paris Observatory, ami by careful
treatment a mushroom was created
which grows all the year round. The
stem is eight Inches high and the
head four to six inches in diameter.
The new variety has been given the
name of "trioholoma nudum." Its
flavor is most delicate and captivat
ing, and the color of the stems of the
first specimens obtained was a pur
plish blue, but this is gradually dis
appearing under extended cultivation.
The head is of a silky white, the in
side a delicate cream

LOOKING AHEAD
HABIT
A bank account is an education in foresight—it
teaches the man who has it to think in terms of
next week and next month and next year. THE
LOOKING-AHEAD HABIT is one of the first char
acteristics of the successful business man.
Money in the bank is a great little helper to the
long - headed thinker. Remember it takes money
to PUT THINGS OVER. Why don’t you get that
“Looking Ahead” habit by starting a hank ac
count with this bank?
