THE MILITARY ROADWAY.
A splendid military roadway be
tween the Augusta Arsenal and Fort
Screven In Savannah, would undoubt
edly be a good thing for the develop
ment of Augusta and Savannah and
we hope that roncreasninn Chtsrb s L.
Edwards will be successful In getting
bis bill through.
It Is a logical military need and
there is every reason, so long as gov

conveniences, that they should

which has long been deprived of 11h

“DEVOTION TO DUTY/*
The editor of the North American

“kiss his (own) wife once a day as

says that the Vice*President may not,
as he believes, have presented a solu

can deny that he exemplifies devo

This is dangerous talk in these da vs

VOTING ON IN EARNEST NOW
LIST APPEARS SUNDAY
The Great Race Is Just Started—Don’t Get Discouraged.
Bear in Mind That You Still Have Over Seven Long Weeks
in Which to Make the Baby a Winner—See the Manager
of the Shower of Gold at Once and Leafn All Details.
The grand Shower of Gold df the
Augusta Herald, that mammoth news
per undertaking which has for Its pri
mary motive the distribution of $2,-
320 In gold and other prizes among
the babies of Augusta and vicinity,
Is Just beginning.
The Shower of Gold has become the
•sensation of this entire locality. Ev
erybody has become interested In it,
whether a ehlld of their town had been
entered In the list or not, for every
body has omo favorite Jn Babyland and
It would be hard Indeed to find fi per
son who has not forrned a preference,
who has not picked some little cherub
whom they hope will win. Wherever
one goes one hears nothing hut talk*
of this great race and speculation as
to its probable outcome, is rife. We
predieted at first that everything else
would have to give wav before the
babies and it lias been even ho.
The nomination lists are still open
and w© Invite you to name your little
favorite for gold and glory If its name
is not already included among our
hundreds of sweet-faced proteges.
Just fill out a nomination blank, which
will be found on another page of this
paper; or, If it Is convenient, Just
write the name, name of parents, and
address upon a postal card and rnalh
It to the Hhower of Gold Department
of the Augusta Herald. The same re
sult may be accomplished by calling
the Shower of Gold Department over
the 'phone, Number 236. ©
In connection with the nomination
blank which appears in these columns
we wish to emphasize one point which
of nations, but especially against this
great republic of the United States
which stands very largely in the posi
tion of a Wig brother to Its sister re
publics to the Houth. /
The absurdity of drawing compari
sons between Villa and Huerta would
not be quite so great, even If Villa
occupied the place f’arranza occupies,
but Vtlla, as he has repeatedly said,
himself. Is only “the fighting man’’ of
the constitutionalists forces, whila
Uarranza Htands aw their chief and
head.

DR. COOK’S NEW CHAMPION
(New York Evening Post.)
Senator Poindexter’s courage In
making himself the champion of Dr.
Frederick A. Cook In the senate Is
peculiarly admirable In that 'he flies
In the face not only of the general
Judgment of Intelligent men the world
over, but in particular ranges himself
In opposition, on this question, to the
leader of his party. Col. Roosevelt’s
recognition of Peary's achievement,
and rejection of the Brooklyn Ynan’s
story, must be well known to the sen
ator from Washington; and even those
who are not progressives would cheer
fully admit the colonel’s special quali
fications for Judging the m< of a
question of exploration. We do not,
however, attach any political signifi
cance to the episode. The desire to
show that the progressives are not a
one-man party has taken many curious
shapes, but we cannot believe that an
asertlon of the authenticity of I>r.
Cook’s amusing observations of* lati
tude and longitude Is one of them.
Mr. Poindexter’s resolution proposes
that Dr. Cook bp given the thanks of
congress for bis achievement. Con
gress, of course, will do nothing of the
kind, but there can he no doubt of
Mr. Poindexter’s receiving the hearty
thanks of Dr. Cook.
