COLUMBIA COMERS COPPED
THE FIRST GAME OF SERIES
Through Clark Throwing the Pill Away and Mackert Lying on
the Ground and Watching Two Men Score and the Ham
mering of Snyder in the Third and Seventh Innings, the
Comers Slipped Away With the Victory.
Manager Harbison of the Columbia
Comers extends his thanks, or should
at least, for the winning of yester
day’s game from the Combacks by the
score of 11 to 8. Through Clark
throwing the pill wild to first and
Mackert lying on the ground and
watching two men's feet patter across
the rubber and also by hammering
Snyder unmercifully in the third and
seventh innings, the Comers slipped
away with the victory. The Columbia
twirler, Gardin, was hit harder and
more frequently than Snyder. Stonl
relieved Snyder in the seventh inning
and that lad certainly did show up
fine (It was his first appearance
here). Of the nine batsmen that faced
him none were able to get a hit and
In fact were also unable to get the
pill out of the infield. "
Of course there’s no use to theorize,
but, just for the sake of an argument,
what would have been the result if
Stone had relieved Snyder in the third
inning, when he began to weaken.
“Slip-ups."
Eliminating the few “slip-ups” that
i wafe made yesterday there was some
I nnghty fine form shown by the local
lads as well as the visitors.
Baker, erstwhile twirler of the New
I York State I.eague, arrived in Au
[ gjista yesterday and proceeded forth
f with to get into shape for the twirl
| ing of today’s game.
As everyone knows, yesterday’s
; game was lost, but why should we
“ kabibble? The season’s over on the
| seventeenth of this month and then
| all of the clubs will again be on an
| even footing. Then w r atch this old
■club.
Second Half.
Augusta opens the second half of
the season in Charleston, playing three
games in that burg. After this series
"Babe's" bunch will hike over to Co
: tumbia for three more games. And
v last, but not least, the Combacks will
arrive in Augusta again for six games
si before leaving again. Albany and 8a-
Ivannah will be taken on respectively.
|Now that all chances have disappeared
| for the locals to cop the first half of
I the season. It’s up to them to go after
| that second half and go after it strong.
1 Let’s all pull together and win that
| last second section, for it can be dona
