BLEfISE AGAIN
IGNORES CHARGE
Governor Silent Over Re
iterated Statement That He
Drove Out Dr. Saunders and
Dr. Babcock.
Lancaster, S. C.—- Again at a gen* \
torlal campaign meeting here did!
Governor Colo D. Blease ignore the;
charge* brought by two of bis opi o
nents, T. D. Jennings and W. P. Pol
lock, that the executive with regents
of the slate hospital tor the insane!
appointed by him, had attempted to j
discredit Dr. Kleanora Saunders, for-1
merly a physician at the asylum una ;
i that her treatment by the governor |
and sis appointee* drove Dr. Maun- .
tiers and Dr. Babcock, the superinten
dent, from the service of the institu- j
tlon.
The governor reiterated his policy
of silence, again declaring that he i
stood on bia own record, and had
neither apology nor explanation 01
any olflcial act or word of his since
occupying the gubernatorial chair.
Thin, however, did not deter Jennings!
und Pollock from again presenting the
record In the Saunders ease as con i
tained In the report of thp legislative I
Investigating committee, which ex-1
onerated Dr. Maunder*. Dr Saunders |
and Dr.- Babcock resigned after the
investigation was completed und the
retort made. *
Lancaster Is the home of Dr. T. J.
Strait, whom Governor Blease ap
pointed to surcOfcd Dr. Babcock as
superintendent.
Dr. Strait was also a member o"
the legislative committee that hives i
legated the asylum alfairs and con ;
doomed certain actions of the board
of regents In reference to Dr. Maun
ders. Dr. Strait scanned the report,
which was unanimous. But tiuo voters
heard the candidates speak today.
Former Chief Justice Ira 11 Jones,
who opposed Governor Blease two
years ago, was an interested listener.
This la Judge Joiich, home.
Blease Lacked Fire.
The governor spoke first. His
speech lacked much of he fire of
former utterances during the iara
lialgri. lie again attacked the new
, primary rules, desiring the personal
enrollment feature was for the pur
pose of cutting down his vote anti
that many men who had followed Lea
and Jackson couldn't write their
names and must go before some little
cigarette sucking clerk and have
service performed for them.
T. i>. Jennings said he would show
that Blease Is unfit for the United
States senate, that lie had tried to
run and wus at loggerheads with
every other department of the state
government and that he had signed
i more pardons than any other gov
ernor South Carolina ever hud.
"Was It because of a tender heart?"
! somebody asked.
"No, not n tender heart, but to
please political henchmen of his,"
Jennings replied.
Jenuings suggested that Governor
Blouse, instead ol going back to
Newberry i > a livery stable, go to
Charleston and “form a partnership
with Janie i Hottiie and he'll be in a
| better business."
W. I’. Pollock declared that the new
I rules were made to prevent "dagoes
and oilier scum from southern Eu
rope, who only come hero for a short
while, from toting." He again read
tlie list of foreigners troin -Vain
Eight, club two. Charleston, saying
"these are the kind of people led to
the polls by Vincent Chlcco and Jim
Sottile to kill your vote and mine,"
and "the kind of men Blease la try-
I lug to Hue you up with."
Jim Crow Law.
“How about the Jim Crow law?"
some one asked. Pollock replied by
say ng he knew of no separate couch
In'reduced by Blease while a
member of ttin legislature, nor had
lie heard of any special support given
by the governor to such a bill.
Senator Smith, the last, speaker,
I met the attacks on his record by tell
l ing some of the things lie has done
i and tried to do since going to the
senate, lie declared .nat aa chair
man of the immigration committee
of the senate he was unalterably op
posed to unrestrleted immigration
and felt hurt that, after hia fight to
keep out European riffraff,, he
should be so severely criticised. He
declared it took 21 years to raise a
native born voter, but only one year
Tor a steamship company to raise a
1 foreign born voter. He said he had
ought to keep out the foreign horde
and preserve the land in America for
Americans.
