Augusta’s Bank Clearings Represent Aetual
Figures For This City-No Boosting
Clearings to Make a Show
It is only fair to Augusta that with the
accompanying figures an explanat'on be
given, to show for what these figures.
Jg Stated herewith, actually repreßent.
Briefly stated they represent the re
ceipts of Augusta’s banks, and on y Au
gusta's hanks. They do not include that
nart of the banking business that merely
passes through this city.
President Rufus H. Brown of the Au
gusta Clearing House Associulion. stated
when giving out the clearings for this
issue that they could not be fairly com
pared with those of Atlanta and Macon.
Mr Brown stated that before a differ
ent system was adopted in Macon and
Atlanta, Augusta’s clearings always
showed up ahead of Macon’s. But now
he says, the bank vlearings of Ma?ou are
not for Macon alone but, as an example
they include the checks drawn on hanks
In towns away from Macon and which
arc not at all receipts for Macon

Alarm Clock Routs Shark
Chief Steward Baillie, of the United
Fruit liner Metapan, which arrived
; from Central America recently, utilia
jed a new method of scaring sharks,
when the steamship was near Puerto
! Colombia. An 18-foot man-eater per-
I sisted in following the ship and eating
everything thrown to it.
The chief steward procured an alarm
clock, which he wound up and set the
alarm to go off within twenty min
utes. Tying the clock to a rope he
dropped. it near the water. The. shark
swallowed it. but still followed.
, When the alarm went off the shark
began cutting capers, standing on Its
1 tail, turning somersaults and trying to
| stop the clock by swallowing lots of
sea water, and finally headed for the
i open sea at tyrrifie speed, lashing the
water with its tail.

ever possible, and can honestly
say that I have found the prod
