and when Governor Blease, the last
speaker marched to the stand pre
ceded by a band from the valley.
The meeting was orderly excepting
considerable heckling at times. Each
was favorably received and the crowd
seemed to be equally divided.
Col. J. Jennings, of Sumter, was the
first speaker. He made a bitter at
tack upon the record of the Governor,
especially his pardon record, citing the
Allan-Emmerson case in Anderson
county, stating that a man who was
the favorite of the majority of the peo
ple did not live up to his doctrine when
he pardoned a man when a coilnter
Petition was lifDftd containing the
names of three thousand more people
than the petition for the pardon. He
was liberally applauded when he fin
ished. He left immediately after the
speaking for Sumter.

W. P. Pollock spoke next. He cited
the case in Aiken county where L. M.
<V Oliveros has been appointed as
master when C&pt. J. E. Murray was
the choice of the majority, as an in
stance of how Blease had not stood
by his pledge which he made before
elected. He said that the race was a
business proposition and Ciat people
were called Upon to elect n man who
would stand by the majority of the
people.
He attacked the Governor's attitude
toward immigrants and pointed out
the alleged Charleston dago who was
a Colonel on his staff.
When asked what his platform was
he replied, "My platform is the polit
ical corpse of Cloe I/. Blease."
He was loudly cheered.
Senator Smith.
Senator E. I>. Smith spoke next and
stated at beginning that lawyers were
in everything that ’ie got mixed in.
i He devoted his time to cotton and his
record in the senate. He explained the
I new currency law and the part he had
j in making It so that it would help the

Governor Biease was the last speak-

jod by about two hundred of his fol
| lowers. He was presented with sev
i eral hunches of flowers and a gold
| headed walking cane from the street
car boys, ile paid his usual compli

he lost votes In Aiken county two

of the proposed new county. He stat
