STATESBORO CITY MALE
CARRIER IN DELEMMA
Statesboro, Oa. Those who look upon
the city mail carrier's Job ns a “snap"
would see differently If they# wecall
ed upon to make round of the city with
a pick of mall Just, one time. At least
that Is what one of the substitute car
riers, Mr. J. H. Alderman, decided after
ofie day’s trial,
Mr. Alderman was one of those w’ho
stood the examination for the postion,
but was not high enough In the list to
secure the first appointment. Me was.
however, placed on the eligible list, and
when the regular carrier became ill after
a few days, the postmaster thought of
MV Alderman as n substitute, “Jim H."
took his pack of mail and tode his round
smilingly. The next trip he went afoot.
Bale at night he returned with much of
the mall undelivered, and stated to the
postmaster that he could not complete
the round for la'k of time; he would
start earlier next day.
But next day “Jim II.“ was not to be
seen nor the next. On the third day
his brother-in-law called upon hlrn on a
matter of business and found him still
in bed from fatigue of two days before.
The thing that was uppermost In his
mind was his failure to deliver the mall
on his route. “You know, I couldn’t
find all them niggle." ho said. “I don't
think I can stand that Job, anyway; I
think the blamed niggers had bettor go
to the post office for their mail."
“Jim ll.’s" friends are sorry he could
not stand the walking, for he was a Jol
ly good carrier; but there are a good
many who feel amused at Ids statement
that the “blamed niggers” bad better
call at the post of flee f«A thel~ mall.—

CHERAW MAN IS CRUSHED
UNDER BELL; GIVING
FIRE ALARM
Anderson, S. C.—A letter received in

liar happening which caused the death
of Reese Hough, a young man of the
Bee I>ee town. A fire was discovered
In David’s store and young Hough, who
was night clerk at the Hanard hotel,
hurried to ring the fire bell. The bell
was suspended beneath the town tank, a

the t inks nt the various cotton mills
around Anderson. He grasped the rope
and gave it a pull. The bell, weighing
700 pounds, and located 150 feet from
the ground, broke Prose from Its fasten
ings and fell. It struck young Hough,
crushed him to the earth, mangling him
horribly, and causing Instant death. Mr.
Hough was marvled and his widow and
several small children survive him.

MASBENGALE WANTS
DEMOCRATS TO VOTE
Secretary of State Committee
Call 3 Attention to the Cam
paign Being Conducted by the
Bull Moo3ers.
St Elmo Massengale, secretary of
tho state item a' ratio executive com
mittee, has went out the following to
the Democrats of the state;
To the Democrats of Georgia:
I desire to call your attention to the
fact that some of the Democratic
nominees are to have opposition In the
November election. Several persons
calling themselves, "Progressives” or
“Bull Moosers” are now opposing the
Democratic nominees. While there
may be no real danger in this move
ment, It will be for every member of
tho Democratic party to turn out and
vot on the 3d day of November.
Most, If not all, of these men who
are now fighting the norminees, voted
in the August primary, and some of
them were candidates In that primary,
running as Democrats. How any man
can vote In a primary and then vote
against the nominees In that primary
is hard to understand, but such is the
case. I. therefore, urge upon every
Democrat in the state tYie Importance
of voting in the November election.
Even If there should be no danger they
should vote in order to show the
strength of the party
I desire, also, to call attention to tin*
resolution passed by the state Demo
cratic Executive Committee” on the
28 th of September, 1914, which pro
vides that all persons who voted in the
August primary and votes against any
of those nominated in that primary in i
the November election will not be per
mitted to vote in the Democratic pri- j
maries hereafter held. This resolu- ;
tion was passed by the eomrfifttee
unanimously, and shows the temper
of the committee on tills question, ahd j
shows that the committee is deter- |
mined to protect the loyal Democrats
by seeing to it that these men shall
no longer be permitted to come into
the Democratic primaries and help to
name the party’s candidates and then
try to defeat them in the regular
election. The Democratic party is in
great danger of being destroyed if we
continue to allow these men to at
tempte to control our party nomina
tions by voting in the Democratic pri
maries, and failing in this, turn “Pro
gressive" or “Bull Moose" and attempt
to wreck It in the general election. If
they are Democrats in August and by
November have discovered that their
consciences will not permit them to
remain with that party longer, thev
should, at least, not turn VOTING
“Progressives" or "Rull Moosers" un
til after those they voted against in
ttie August primary, and who were
nominated therein, are elected.
I, therefore, trust that every Demo
crat in the state will turn out and
vote for all tho nominees In the No
vember election. They are the stand
ard bearers of the party, and it Is the
duty of the Democrats of the state
1 to see that they are elected. We owe
1 it to them as well as to the party to
have the party make a good showing
by polling its full strength in the
ejection.
Very respectfully.
E. J. REAGAN, Charman.
State Democratic Executive Com’tee.
