ABOUT IRELAND AND THE WAR.
To The Herald.
1 have always regarded with a feel
ing akin to contempt people who write
the public press under the cloak of a
nom de plume, so that it is with the
‘ greatest reluctance” —to use the un -
necessary superlative of your corre
spondent—that I reply to “B. L.”
Where did he get that stuff about
“the mistaken idea of a large num
ber of my countrymen that England’s
defeat by Germany would bring free
dom to Ireland?"
1 am a close student of Irish af
fair and I have never yet seen or
heard such a statement.
The sympathy with German arms,
expressed by a “large number” of
Irishmen arises from the desire to see
the common enemy vanquished. Even
the far-fetched idea of his were
possible, and Germany should abso
lutely subdue England, the Irish would
not jxpect freedom from Germany in
fact, Germany would be ignored. But,
with the English yoke removed, Ire
land would declare independence and
if Germany or any other country
should challenge their right to do so,
and invade her shores, the sons of
Erin would resist to the last. If such
an imaginary struggle should take
place, Germany would find herself
opposed by a formidable foe—namely,
the universal Irish race, for, thanks
to England’s oppression, the Irish Celt
has multiplied throughout the civilized
world and pride of race is the pass
port of an Irishman.
After all, Ireland has not been so
“unfortunate,” and men who use the
term are not real friends of their
country. Enforced emigration has de
veloped an international Irish power

our own little island.
The introduction of the question of
religion in matters purely Irish is not
advisable, especially at present when
so much calumny and lies are being
circulated about members of the Cath
olic faith. People not conversant with
Irish affairs are liable to infer from
the term “Catholic Ireland” that all
the Irish profess that faith. In the
struggle for Irish freedom we find
the names of Robert Emmett, Theo

Orr—all Protestants!
I would like to see “B. L." come out

Over 000,000 tons of shipping have passed through
the Panama Canal since October 15. Half ol this ton
nage was devoted to shipments to and from the West
Coast of North America and the next largest factor was
in vessels bound to and from the East Coast of North
America from and to the West Coast of South America.
Vessels bound north carried cargoes of nitrate and
other raw materials and those bound south carried man

Now that Turkey is at war shipments to and from
the Far East will utilize the Panama Trench. And Amer
