13 SHIES ARE
FIGHTING PLAGUE
With Cattle Shipments Barred
From Canada and With
Cooler Weather, Officials Are
Hopeful.
Washington, D. C.— 13 states
under federal quarantine and cattle
shipments barred from Canada, offi
cials of the Department of Agricul
ture working with local authorities
pressed their’fight today to halt the
spread of the foot and mouth disease
among livestock. Colder weather in
the Infected states, it was believed
would tend to check the epidemic.
Can’t Estimate Effect.
Department officials said they c(*til,l
not estimate the effect of the quaran
tine against Canada, until it was de
termined whether the cattle had been
imported for immediate slaughter or to
be fattened. Yearly Importations ot
cattle from the dominion amount to
about $9,000,000.
Reports from field agents in In
diana and Michigan led to expressions
of hope at the department that the
epidemic tn those states had been
fought under control.
