KEEPING SCRAPS.
To the Herald:
The primary rcquiaite of a use
ful system of scrap-keeping are three:
1, The system mimt udmll of proper
classification by (subject*, 2, the
■crape moat, be readily accessible,
once thi'y are classified; 3, there muat
be (some quick means of rearrange
ment, If necessary
The old-fashioned scrap bonk la set
ting; to be leas and less satisfactory
for the preservation of clippings.
A great deal o." time la consumed In
rutting and pasting up the scraps and
even when they are pasted up the
collector run* the risk of not getting
together aTI the matters bearing on
the same subject They become sepa
rated either through hick of apace or
Inability to rearrange the material at
hand.
The best way of keeping together ull
the ehpntnes on a given subject ta to
put thVsn In mnntlla envelopes, and
these In a vertical letter file. The size
of the envelopes will vary with the
collector's needs, and the vertical fil
ing cases may he obtained In sections
ai.i” «x(landed as desired. All the col
lector baa to do when he haa some
thing he wants to keep ts to run hla
band along the top of the envelopes,
reading their contents, and In time lie
will Instinctively find the one where
his clipping belongs. Ho should then
put It with the others and write Hie
title of It on the envelope. In this way
thousands and thousands of scraps
can he kept accessible at a moment’s
notice.
Then there Is another big advan
tage One rarely knows In advance
Just why he ts collecting along a c er
tain line. The number of clippings
Increases, and the subject expands
and expands, till at last comes the
central Ides, and the whole mass of
material shapes itself With the tna
olllh envelope system It Is very eaay
to gather together subjects that are
closely allied to the central theme,
and 10 rearrange them In proper se
quence.

13 AUGUSTA WIDE-OPEN?
Tn The Herald:
It liati been said that Augusta la a
wicked city, yrt t<> the naked eye, It
look* like a vary saintly city You
ran aaa the advertisements on the <1 ir
farant corners, tailing of the big
church revival* Htlll, na I aay, it la
vary wicked, n city of wide-open vice
Why la thia? Are the churches asleep
after nil? To which ninny voices arise
In protest. Then may 1 aak hos the
"Devil" a hold In them, Is he actively
at work?
Thia looks very prol'shly to me
Come folks let's rout him out. can't
you see that he la merely drawing
the divine fire of the Augusta pul
pits to meet his own ends? How do
you aak? t'nn't we see, nre we blind
that we can't ace hla alms?
While our worthy ministers dis
course at length on the evils of tli«
■'Movies'' and the soda founts on Hurt
day. Old Nick revels In glee And
why should he not?' Hasn’t hla ma
chiavellian : ethods been successful?
In other words while the “movies" mid
soda founts are under fire of our
churchmen, the real places of vice are
"wide-open." And on Sunday, worse
than ever for they are shorn of their
fake fronts, such as the so-called
dance halls and "fake groerles "
As It Is almost Impossible to keep
the young people at home on Sunday
afternoon why not l»t them have the
■•movies," and soda founts, under the
eye* of respectful society, rather than
the lonely nothing to do hut walk and
talk and do other things worse?
