Sharp Criticism of Administra
tion Regarding Attitude To
wards Mexico and the Firing
on Tennessee’s Launch.
Boston.—Criticism of th.e adminis
tration’* attitude in connection with
the recent firing upon a boat from the
cruiser Tennessee in Turkish waters
and with the Tampico incident in the
Mexican trobules, was made last night
by i'nited States Senator Henry Cabot
Rodge. Speaking before the Middle
sex Club, a Republican organization,
the senator said:
"The administration is content to
have it appear that the Tennesee was
fired upon to give warning of mines,
but you all know what happened at
Tampico. Then within three days the
American sailors were in Mexican
waters and shedding their blood.. And
now —the incident of the salute seems
to have been forgotten. And the flag
was never saluted.
A Fighting Age.
“Ail our efforts should have been
devoted to bringing about pacification
In Mexico Instead of getting Huerta
out of office. As it Is now. Mexico
is in the throes of revolution and the
two pets of this administration. Car
ranza and . ilia are at each other’s
throats.” s
“The party in power should remem
ber,” Mr. Hodge added, “that these are
perilous times. It should inquire into
the state of our defenses. The presi
dent Says this is an academic ques
tion. This is a fighting world—a
fighting age. Ret us find out the con
dition of our army and of our navy
ifiid the slate of our preparedness.
Ret those findings be made known to.
the people and then let the people say
whether the money shall tie diverted
from building southern pnstoffices to
our-defenses."
