Black Ruins in Track of Armies
Fighting a Short Distance to
North of Vitry-le-Francois.
Vitry-le- Francois Black ruins
which have Just ceased smouldering,
houses whose interiors have been de
molished by bursting shells, leaving
only the skeletons of their structures
standing, others with sides blow'n out,
still others where only a chimney
stack remains erect are common sights
in this portion of the tract of the ar
mies fighting a short distance to the
north.
Amid the desolation, In half shelter
ed shacks, sit women and children and
old men, tittering scarcely a word ex
cept about their husbands and fathers
and sons away with the army, and
frcmi whom news Is rare, if it caines at
all. Lack of laborers makes it almost
impossible for the villagers to start
anv repairs. Trade is at a standstill
and the common articles of domestic
necessity are difficult to obtain owing
to the dislocation of transport.
Disappeared.
Only a mile or two from Cltry the
villages of Erighleourt and Courde
ntange have virtually disappeared, ex
cept for dlsorderely heaps of bricks,
tiles and stones which a few weeks
ago were houses The fighting around
here was some of the most terrible of
the war In Its Intensity. The fields
are dotted with deep holes made bv
bursting (ierman and French shells,
while all about aw small mounds

and French soldiers Interred where
they fell. Even in the drainage ditches
along the roads many graves were has
tily made and small crosses formed
of two broken branches of trees placed
over them, without name or number
to indicate the occupants.
The Church of Courdem&nge. with
the exception of one house which did
! not appear to have been hit, seemed
ito have sufered less than the other
' structures of the village. This was
Possibly owing to Its strong wall*
which are five feet In thickness. At
one comer, where a large shell struck,
there Is a deep Indication, while splint
ers knocked out stones here and there
and shattered all the stained glass
windows.
Three Days' Duration.
Thr Mule In Courdemnnge lasted
nearly three days before the Germans
hurriedly departed through Vttry-le-
VYaneols. In the streets of the vll

with corpses which were later Interred
by the inhabitants.

AFTER HOSPITALS AND DOC
TORS FAILED—EX-ZEMA-FO
CURED.
D. Holmes, Ozone Park, Long Is
land, N. Y., writes: “While you have
not asked for a testimonial, I fee!
that it is due. A preparation such as
EX-ZEMA-FO should he known to
everyone. I was a sufferer of that
terrible disease called eczema for
seven years, doctored with the most
eminent New York specialists and
several various Skin Hospitals to the
expense of over S3OO. Two bottles
of EX-ZEMA-FO cured me, and the
best of it all was that I was able to
give up the use of a salve, which
was what they all prescribed. Your
remedy EX-ZEMA-FO is a clean
liquid, did not soil my linen and went
right to the spot. I have been recom
mending it to every one afflicted with
this disease and results have been the
same as in my case.
EX-ZEMA-FO is the only prepar
ation of its kind sold on the guar
antee that it cures or money is re
funded.
