THE AUGUSTA HERALD, AUGUSTA. GA.
Speaking
THE...
Public Mind
MOVING PICTURES ON SUNDAY.
To The Herald:
f notice that the question, "Shall
Augusta Have Moving Pictures in
!!»15?" is causing a great deal of In
terest. That considerable opposition
is put forth by the religious element,
|ls quite natural. I claim that opposi
| tion to Sunday amusements is the
| result of heredity. It Is something
new. If Sunday amusements had
! been the custom for a long time and
someone should try to abolish them
now, he would meet with much oppo
sition. It is the opinion of many
people that things that have never
been, should not be.
Can there be a sacred time? What
Is time? Nothing! There can no
more be a sacred "time” than there
ran he a sacred nothing. 1 imagine
j that before the universe was created,
jif there were ever such an eternity,
that this same "nothing” existed, al
| though r. an was not alive to record
sit as "time.’’ What is good to be done
Saturday there can be no harm in do
ing Sunday.
After all, let It be up to the people;
if they prefe • motion pictures to the
church and home, let them have mo
tion pictures. LIBERAL.
FIGHTING FIRES IN NORTH
AUGUSTA.
To The Herald:
Please allow me space In your
"Speaking the Public Mind” column to
j speak a little piece of public mind
about the KICKER who objects to the
j Augusta Firemen going to North Au-
I gust a.
He says that he is a taxpayer,
| meaning that the firemen are his hired
men. I figure that if he is a LARGE
TAXPAYER, possibly it cost him
about three-eights of a cent for the
time his hired men were gone to put
out Ihe fire on his neighbor's house.
I think Augusta can lay undisputed
elaim to the meanest men in the
world. If his body was as small as
his soul, he could farm on a fly speck
J and have plenty of room left to run
| around and kick.
Just to save breathing expenses he
;Is liable to quit, and go where he is
going, and I hate to think of him as
j he reposes on a beautiful heap of red
hot coals or wafts about from billow
to billow on white hot flames, worry
ing about that three-eighths of a rent
his hired men beat him out of to do an
act of charity while they were not
busy, hut it can't he helped now.
NORTH AUGUSTAN.
CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME.
To The Herald.
Please allow me space to ask a few
questions and answer a few as I ask
them.
Why are women and children suf
fering? Why are honest men dot al
lowed to earn an honest living? Why
do our ministers and others solicit
funds to send away from our starving
ones at home?
Charity should begin at home. There
is enough food and clothing to fur
nish the people of the United States
for twelve months if there was not
any crops raised or clothing manufac
tured in one year. There is more mon
ey In this country now than ever be
fore and more clothing stored in shops,
warehouses and factories than ever
before and more food of all descrip
tions than ever before. Just look in
some of our wholesale houses: flour,
meat and grain piled to the roof; cars
standing unloaded filled with good
things to eat; and just walk two blocks
and you will see men, women and
children hungry, l.ook at the work
to he done on our streets, houses and
roads. L>ook at the bad railroad tracks,
bad box and flat cars, worn out en
gines, dangerous boilers, rotten cross
ties and bridges. Work! Work! Plenty
for all to earn an honest living; but
no, we are not wanted. We have
worked and made all this food and
clothing, mode so much till we must
starve and go naked.
The American people as a whole are
too proud to beg for food or clothing
but are forced to beg for a chanca
to earn bread. I saw today a big, fine
automobile on Walton Way with only
an old Indy and a great, big, hairy
dog sitting beside her. The lady’s
arm was around the dog as if to pro
tect hint from harm; and just at the
same moment I saw two little girls
and a little boy walking In the mud
which is about six inches deep. One
little girl remarked, "Look at the dog."
I wonder if she wondered, why should
I walk in mud while a dog rides in an
automobile. 1 also wondered if the
lady had any grandchildren made of
the same flesh and blood as these
three little ones. When God mado
man and beast, did He intend that the
beast should ride and the human walk*
Why are we taxed with a war tax?
We are not at war with anyone—ex
cept labor and capital. But we are
called upon to furnish more of our
hard-earned cash for the government.
Called on for a war tax when there
is not war that should trouble us at
all. Why should our factories shut
down or go on short time when peo
pie are In rags? Why should rail
roads stop running trains to bring
us food and clothing and we hungt.v
and naked? Why should the price of
food go up when the capitalists claim
there is no demand for it in the for
eign market? Why can we buy Am
erican-made goods cheaper in Europe
than we can in America? Why can
we buy oranges as cheap in New York
as in Florida, or California? Why
can we buy clothing cheaper in Chi
cago and New York than we can in
Augusta, when the cotton nnd most
all wool Is raised in the South? Some
thing is wrong with our system. Why
has the price of cotton gone down and
cotton good* gone up"
Will this answer suffice for all—
Our country Is run by nnd for the
idle few ns against the industrious
many.

PROVISIONS FOR THE ARMY
IN THE FIELD.
Importance of keeping body
well nourished.
In time of war, the greatest effort
is always made toward cutting off the
enemy’s base of supplies. It Is the
well-nourished people who fight the
strongest and live the longest and con
tribute most to human progress. Is
your stomach doing its duty—does It
convert food into good blood and tis
sue?
Dr. Pierce’ Golden Medical Discov
ery has been so successful in the
treatment of Indigestion, that thou
sands of former sufferers owe their
good health of today to its wonderful
power, and testimonials prove it.
It arouses the little muscular fibres
into activity and causes the gastric
juices to thoroughly mix with the food
you eat, simply because it supplies the
stomach with pure, rich blood. It’s
weak, impure blood that causes stom
ach weakness. Get good blood through
the use of Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical
Discovery, and you will have no more
indigestion.
It is the world's proved blood puri
fier. It’s not a secret remedy for its
ingredients ere printed on the wrap
per. Start to take it today and before
another day has passed the impuri
ties of the blood will begin to leave
your body through the liver, kidneys,
bowels and skin, and in a few days
you will know by your steadier nerves,
firmer step, keener mind, brighter
eyes and clearer skin that the bad
blood is passing out, and new, rich,
pure blood Is filling your veins and
arteries.
The same good blood will cause pim
ples, acne, eczema and all skin erup
tions to dry up and disappear. Dr.
Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery is
the helpful remedy that nearly every
one needs. It contains no alcohol or
narcotics of any kind.
