Chicago.—Wheat scored fresh ad
vance today. Export demand was strong.
Opened 5-8 off to a shade up, then as
cend: 1 generally with May going more
than 3-4 cents above last night.
Corn hardened with wheat. Somewhat
larger receipts, however, acted as a
check on bulls. Opened unchanged to
l-8c higher, followed by a slight reac
tion, then by a moderate rise all around.
One of the lending elevator compa
nies bought oats, helping price although
otherwise the volume of trade was small.
Realizing sales by packers weakened
provisions.
The gain In wheat and a good deal
more disappeared under long profit tak
ing sales There were bearish rumors
that French and British fleets had forced
the Dardanelles. Closed unsettled, l-8a
1-4 to 3-4 c under last night.
Corn held steady. Closed l-4a3-8 to
1-fc above last night.

Neevv York. —There was a renewal of
yesterday’s buying movement at the
opening of the cotton exchange today
and first prices were 3 to 13 points net
high eft* wdth December relatively firm on
covering by foreign shorts. Houses with
Liverpool and continental connections
were also bilyers of the Voter months and
the advance had the encouragement of
the continued steadiness of interior spot
markets. There were considerable real
izing sales for over the holidays, how
ever. and the market eased off 4 or 5
points from the best during the early
trading. , , .
Active months sold 5 to » points net
lower during the middle of the day un
der continued realizing and sointe jocu
selling for a reaction which may nave
been partly inspired by reports of South
ern hedge selling of May and July. Thc-Ve
w«*\s covering and a moderate commission
house demand at the decline.
There was continued Realizing and
scattered Southern selling during the
early afternoon but there was a better
demand at some 6 to 9 points under the
closing figures of last night nad prices

New Orleans —The cotton market open
ed todav two to three points higher on
good cables but buyers of the early part
of the week started realizing profits and
llieir offerings weighed against prices.
Half an houV after the opening trading
months were 1 to 2 points under yes
terday’s close.
Realizing became heavy as the morn
ing grew older and added to the offer
ings'was hedge selling Prom the interior,
in which Texas led. At noon prices were
7 to 8 points under yesterday’s finals.
The market was .11 but steady after
the noon hour. At 1:39 prices were 7 to
9 points down, net.
Cotton closed steady at a net decline
of 11 to 15 points.

NEW YORK STOCK MARKET
New York.—Early trading in .today’s
stock market indicated a icontinuance of
the recent dull and narrow movement.
A majority of the active issues were
unchanged or at fractions above and oe
low yesterday's close. Heading was the
onl stock to move more than a slight
fraction, gaining 5-8, which it soon lost.
Steel was a trifle lower al the outset
but recovered on dealings which included
a block so 1.000 shares. Otherwise the
overturn was in small lots anti by the
end of the first 30 minutes business fell
away to mine* proportions with a lower

the early afternoon when steel fell to its
minimum price of 4S. Many other prom
inent stocks W’eVe off 1 to 3 points and
now low prices were established all
around.
