NEW YORK COTTON
New York. —The cotton market open
ed steady today at an advance of one to
three points in response to relatively
steady cables with January contracts
selling at 11.76 and May at 12.15 on cov
ering for over the week-end.
General business, however was very
quiet and early fluctuations were ir
regular with traders supposed to be
waiting for the census ginning figufes
on Monday. Private cables attributed
the advance from an opening decline in
Liverpool to spinners’ calling, but the
amount of cotton on shipboard showed a
falling off for the week, and a private
crop estimate of 12,355,000 bales includ
ing linters combined with better weather
conditions in the South, probably tend
ed to check buying.
Considerable attention was attracted
by a Washington despatch to the effect
that competitive buying by the British
and German governments had absorbed
1,250,000 bales during the progress of tlie
advance earlier in the season.
The cotton market closed steady.
Reactions of four or five points were
followed by renewed steadiness on cover
ing late in the morning with May sell
ing up to 12.'17 and closing at 12.16. The
general list closed steady at a net ad
vance of three to five points.

CHICAGO GRAIN MARKET
Chicago.—Prospects for larger receipts
gave an advantage today to the bears in
wheat. Reports from Minneapolis and
Kansas City pointed especially to a rapid
accumulation of stocks. Besides, the
export outlook continued depressing and
quotations from Liverpool were lower.
The opening here, which showed a de
cline otf 9* to 1%. was followed by a
moderate additional setback. First prices
were 1.03% to 1.04 for December and
1.05 %to 1.06*4 for May.
Corn went low r er with wheat. Profit
taking by longs was a feature. After
opening *4 to % <iv % down, the market
underwent a slight further sag.
Oats reflected the weakness of
other grain. Trade ior the most part
was of a local character.
Declines in the hog market carried
provisions downgrade. On the break
shorts were buyers to a fair extent.
Selling of a week-end description pre
vented any important rally in wheat. The
dose was unsettled, 1*4(®1% to 1% net
lower, with December at 1.03%(&)% and
May at 1.05%.
Some persistent buying on the part of
houses with country connections helped
later to check weakness in corn. The
close was steady at % to %@% net de
cline.

NEW YORK JjTOCK MARKET
New York. —Liquidation caused numer
ous stocks to decline to lowest prices
of the week today. Dealings were light
but supply exceeded the demand. Sup
port was most often lacking, especially
in war shares, where greatest heaviness
was reflected. There were no definite
ovrnight developments but the feeling of
caution among traders and Investors
seemed to be on the increase.
Even rails, which recently manifested
a stronger tendency, lost ground with
the more speculative issues. Some sub
stantial recoveries were made later,
Texas Company suddenly advancing 10V4
to 203. The closing was irregular.
Bumis were firm.
