Dr. C. T. Walker N
Advises Negroes
of Their Duties
Dr. C. T. Walker, of Augusta, made
an able address before an audience at
Aiken composed of white people and
negroes, a short time ago. Dr. Walker,
as reported by the Aiken Standard,
made a splendid Impression. The
Standard says:
The negroes of Ailjfcn placed them
selves on record Sunday as being true
American citizens desirous of showing
their patriotism at the patriotic meet
ing held at the court house, when C. T.
Walker, D. D., L. D. D., of Augusta, the
foremost lender of his race in this
section, delivered an address which
was heard by a large audience of both
white and colored people.
Cyrus Campfleld presided over the
meeting and introduced Dr. Walker as
"An American citizen who is the ex
ponent of all that is good and help
ful.”
The past record of the negro, said
Dr. Walker, has proven his loyalty and
the best white people of the south
never question it. The negro was true
in the sixties to the unprotected wo
men and children.
The speaker pictured Jesus as a pat
riotic citizen, lie went over Jerusalem
like a patriot, a conspicuous example
of pure democracy.
''Humanity,” declared Dr. Walker,
"is God’s great thought. The Euro
pean war is being fought in the inter
est of humanity. God's time has come
for humanity to put down.autocracy
and despotism.” Kussia was pointed
out as a sign.
"God is getting tired of kings and
kaisers," declared the speaker.
Where America Stands.
"America, as n nation, stands for
liberty and . Justice. America wants
Justice for the oppressed peoples. The
individual citizen has his part to play,
and the colored people are American
citizens. I have always believed that
I was.” The negro, he said, helped to
lay the foundation of America. He fell
ed the timbers that helped America to
get a flag. The first blood spilled in
the Revolution, he said, was negro
blood, the blood of a Massachusetts
negro. He reviewed the record of tho
negro in the Revolution, In the War of
1812, and In the Mexican W r ar, and
said there were 200,000 negroes In the
War Hetween the States. In the Span
ish-American War it Is well known
what part the negro played.
"Whenever the negro goes wrong he
is generally led wrong by Borne white
mun who has tampered with him," de
clared Drr Walker, who referred then
to the fact that German Influences are
at work to lead the negro astray to
day. “The young negro of today must*
keep the record clean.”
Due to Ignorance.
He had heard many remarks, said
Dr. Walker, made by negroes, that
they "hadn't lost anything In Ger
many" or that they "have no country."
These, he said, are due to ignorance.
"America," he said, "Is our country.
The negro has fought iA all the wars
of this country. The negro has no oth
er flag except the Stars and Stripes.
What flag has Africa?” he asked, and
“How Dong since you left Africa?''
"No man who is not willing to fight
for the flag should he entitled to the
protection of the flntr"
The freeing of Cuba, said Dr. Wal
ker, was the greatest thing, to his
mind, that the Fnlted States had ever
done. Cuba has shown her gruitude by
declaring war against Germany when
the United States did so. Likewise,
"whatever concerns the white man
concerns the negro. If the Germans
come to America you may not expect
them to elevate the negroes but they
"Will kill the negroes the same as they
kill the whites, the same as they laid
waste to Helglum and France. They
will spare no race."
Dr, Walker urged the negroes to "cut
out the fo<dlsh talk," And added: "The
negro cannot succeed by court decis
ions. but by cope rating with their
white neighbors, with their next door
neighbors. Identify yourself with the
white man; make yourself useful. The
old-time negro understands the white
man and gets what he wants from
him."
"He true, loyal American cltiiens."
