IN VELVET AND SATIN
This slip-on blouse with long
slender lines is an outstanding fea
ture of the advance Winter modes.
It has tucks at the sides and is
slashed at the front to show a foun
dation of velvet in self-color. I4clow
the elbows the sleeves flare smartly,
to be finished with turn-back cuffs
of the velvet. A vestee of the velvet
rises about the oval-shaped neck at
the front, where it is finished with
a straight upper edge, introducing a
new effect in necklines. Medium
sire requires 3 yards 36-inch satin
and IZi yard 36-inch velvet, with
yard lining.

“THE BAT” PLEASES
AUGUSTA AUDIENCE;
ATTENDANCE SMALL
By RICHARD W. RILEY
‘‘The Bat”, phenomenal stage
success by Mary Roberts Rinehart
and Avery Hopwood, presented at
the Imperial Monday matinee and
night, was accorded the plaudits of
these who went to see It in fullest
measure. It was "only to be expected
that “The Bat” would please. It’s
record is an illustration of the kind
of a show that makes theatrical
history. It is the mystery play that
hasn’t been equalled by numerous
imitators.
The crowds at the two shows here
Monday were by no means large,
hut they wore enthusiastic in their
Praise of the masterful plot and its
excellent execution. The cast is
good and the entire show is Just as
good as it was the first year it
came South.
Clara Coleman, In the part of
‘"Lizzie", the maid, Is as funny as
i she can be. Mary Lewis, as Miss
Cornelia Van Qorder, is the strong
est member of the east in her part
as the elderly spinster who out
detects the smart detective and of
fers the final solution to the all
absorbing mystery that makes the
show what it is; Ernest Howard as
| Dr. Wells is good, going the limit
with such manipulations of his fea
tures that do their share toward
further mystifying the enthralled
audience; Richard Fleming, while
his part is short-lived. Is on excel
lent portrayal by Robert F. Stev
ens, who is also the stage manager
of the show: John Milton, as A’.-
drew, the detective, carries his
"smart-Alecky” part off to perfec
tion; Arthur J. O'Keefe, as Billy,
the butler, Barbara Ladd, as Miss
Dale Odgen. Richard Bishop, as
Reginald Beresford, and William
Lenox, as the unknown man, are
all good, with Lenox the best of
this group.
A haunted house, murder, at
tempted robbery, hank defalcation,
vindication of the innocent and the
final solution of the puzzle hat ex
ists until the final curtain, all go
to make “The Bat” the fine produc-
I tion that it is.
