WASHINGTON. —Uncle Sam has
no Intentions of going In for long-dis
tance weather forecasting.
Ho doe* not believe It can be done.
So say Weather Bureau officials, re
plying to scores of letters pointing
out ways wherein they might reveal
the course of the elements months
hence.
"We predict the weather two days
In advance," say the prognosticators,
"snd we Issue weekly forecasts. .
"On special occasions, such as holi
days and big sporting events, we
may go so far as to hazard a guess
more than a week ahead of time. But
right there wa stop."
And Professor W. J. Humphreys,
the bureau's meteorological physicist,
explains that "to prodlrt anything,
you first have to know Its causes."
"The further back you can deter
mine these cause." he declares, “the
longer range prediction you can
make.
"Various weather conditions result.

in general, by alp currents. These '
are brought about by high and low
atmospheric pressure areas—air rush
ing from the high toward the low.
When wc locate the pressuVe areas,
then, we can form some Idea of what
the air currents will be.
"But what causes the various pres
sure areas?
"A supposition Is that they arc
caused by hot and cold spots on the
earth's surface. A hot spot heats the
air above It, causes It to expand, and
the pressure is lowered A «old spot
works just the opposite.
"Then we get to the causes of the
hot and cold spots, and that's where
we come to a halt. We don't know—
so that's as far as our predlctlona
can go."
Herbert Janvrln Browne, Inde
pendent Washington meteorologist,
has another theory.
BROWNE DISAGREES.
"The" aun Is the source of the
arth’s heat," he says. "Therefore
; the hot spots on the earth's surface
; must be caused by the sun. Ground
Is a poor conductor of heat, so the
only spots that count are those In the
Water.
“In other words, the ocean la the
sun's heat reservoir. Portions of It
are heated, and this heat is trans
ferred by the ocean currents.
"If we chart these currents, then,
we will know where the various low
atmospheric pressure areas are going
to appear. And charting the cold cur
rens will show us where the high
preesuse areas will be. Accurate long
range weather forecasting will re
sult.”
"But the Weather Burdau officials
