Some saphead, writing for the
Atlanta Journal, has been trying
to work up a reputation as a hu¬
morist at Jeaup’s expense.
The witticisms evolved from the
sawdust brain of this would-bt
Mark Twain would almost make a
wooden man laugh.
If this erratic genius wishes to
pose as a humorist, he should seek
other means to do so thau trying
to Injure the reputation of a town,
which—although not an Atlanta—
feels any maliufous fling her as
deeply as does Atlanta when she
maligned by the yellow journalism
of New York.
Probably the gentleman in ques¬
tion was only writing from a
moristic standpoint. If so, ws will
admit that he would have
hie point—if it had been worked
at the expense of some town that
deserved it, and, taken es a
had not been so absurdly silly.

The good people of Hortense and
the surrounding country are still
fighting the good fight.
A few months ago, the good
brethern W. D. Middleton. J. L.
Lewis and others engaged in hold
ing prayer meetings at some of the
neighbors’ houses every Sunday
afternoon. They did much good,
although they had the devil and
bis agents to contend with; but
never-the-less the earnest prayers
still went up in behalf of the peo¬
ple. And as their desires were for
greater results, Bro. Lee was cor
dialiy invited to come and hold a
series of meeting in the vicinity of
Hortense, which he did. And such
good results have never before
been known for Hortense.
Nearly every house in the vicin¬
ity is a house of prayer, regardless
of all that baa been said malicious¬
ly by fabricators and fallacious
persons.
Many accusations were brought
up falsely, such as Mormoniem and
mesmerism. The good people are
still shouting to God for such spir¬
itual mesmerism. And what a
great pity that the fan of mesmer¬
ism had not been sufficiently large
to waft the mesmeric breexe
thronghout the whole country.
“Where there is no wood the fire
goeth out: So “where there is no
tale bearer, atnfe ceaseth;” but
glory to God the people of thia
community are not to idiomatic as
to become obfiscated at such tales
Christ said unto bis disciples:
It is impossible but that offenses
will come; but woe unto him
through whom they come.” The
people of this community have
learned that sin and religion ere
not miscible, but are immiscible
So they serve God instead of mam¬
mon. When the righteeus are in
authority, the people rejoice; but
when the wicked beareth rule, the
people mourn,
The righteous are in authority
in this community; they watch
over one another in love that they
may help each other to work out
their salvation. The Baptists and
Methodists are still working in uni¬
ty; three prayer meetings during
the week. The people continue to
get converted anb sanctified. At
one of their prayer meetings at the
Baptist church the other evening
two proclaimed conversion and
three sanctificatiop. So you see
the mesmerism must undoubtedly
be lasting, as they were prostrated
at the altar before conversion or
sanctification reached them, just
the same as they were during the
tent services.
“Cast thy bread upon the waters:
for thou shall find it after many
days.” The prayers of the righteous
availeth muoh in this community.
A few days ago Jsmes Strickland, a
son of Joseph Striokland, was tak¬
en very 111 with *a scorching fever,
which continued for a few days,
and realising his spiritual condi¬
tion, he felt that be was a vile sin¬
ner, and he became somewhat
alarmed as he was physically grow¬
ing weaker all the time. So be sent
for the good people to come and
pray for him. They were at that
time bolding a prayer meeting in
the vicinity at a school house. So
they came and Did their hands on
him in earnest prayer and the
fever left him immediately; and he
was gloriouly converted before
they ceased to pray for him.
God’s power is very great and is
shown in a great many ways, and
most especially when rightfully
sought for, though in a great many
instances, denying Peter and doubt¬
ing Thomas are still in the land;
and the would be Judas if possi¬
ble.
Seek ye the Lo-d while He may
yet b* found, for the spirit of God
will not always strive with man.
