-Sea Above the Clouds.
Remarkable Yarn Told By An
Old English Writer.
Prom the Cos ton Post.
The curious superstition that
there is an ocean above the clouds
is illustrated by the following
strunge story told by an old English
writer:
“One Sunday the people of a cer¬
tain village were coming out of
church on a thick, cloudy day,
when they saw an anchor of a ship
hooked to one of the-tombstones—
the cable, which was tightly’ strech
ed, hanging dowft- from the air.
The people were astonished, and
while they were consulting about
it suddenly they saw the rope move
as though some one labored to p jll
the anchor. The anchor, how¬
ever, still held fast by the stone,
and n great noise was heard in the
air like a shouting of sailors.
Presently a sailor was seen sliding
down the cable for the purpose of
unfixing tha anchor. When he had
jus* loosened it tee villagers seized
hold of him, and while in their
hands lie quickly died, just as
though he had been drowned.
“About an hour after the.sailors
above hearing no more of their
comrade, cut the cable and sailed
away. In memory of this extraor¬
dinary event the people of the vil¬
lage made the hinges of the church
doors out of the iron of the an
chor. •
It ' is further stated that these
hinges are still to be seen there,” n
bit of evidence much like Mun¬
chausen’s rope wherewith, ho once
climbed to the moon—if you doubt¬
ed the story you were coufronted
with the rope.
There is another queer tale about
this aerial sea.
“A merchant of Bristol,” it. is
sajd, “set sail with his cargo for
Ireland. Some time after, while
his family were at supper, a knife
suddenly fell in through the win
dow on the table, When the mer¬
chant t-etnYned and saw the knife
he 'declared it to be his own, and
that bn such a day, at such-fin hour
while sailing in an unknown part of
the sea, lie dropped the knife over
board, and the day and hour were
fnund - » to - oe exactly i .l the time -i when i
the knife fell through the window.”
All of w itch was once implicitly
bel’eved by matiy and regajded as
incontrovertible proof of the exist¬
ence af a sea above the sky. One is
at a , loss to conjecture , how that , un
known “part of the sea” is connect
ed with the rest of it. A physical . ,
geography ° r * showing ° this would be
no small curiosity.
