Three Witnesses In Murder Case
Jailed Under Perjury Charge.
At 1’allulah Falls, Ga., Friday morn¬
ing Chubb Wall was convicted in the
Rabun superior court of the murder
of Christopher O'Byrne, with a rec¬
ommendation to mercy. Judge Estes
sentenced him to life imprisonment.
After the examination of six Atlanta
witnesses had been delivered James
O’Byrne, brother of the murdered
man, swore out warrants against ex
Detective Mahaffey, G. W. Crusselle
and E. W. E. Williams, charging them
with perjury. All three of them were
arrested and jailed.
HEAVY BATTERY FOR BUFFALO.
Uncle Sam’s Artillery Will Give Exhi¬
bition Drills at the Exposition.
A Dispatch from Norfolk, Va., says:
Battery B, Seventh United States
heavy artillery, left Fort Monroe Sat¬
urday afternoon by the Chesapeake
line and Baltimore for the Buffalo ex¬
position. There the battery will give
exhibition drills in the handling of
heavy field artillery.

odist ministers in Trinity church at
Worcester, Mass.. Monday, a clergy¬
man sAid that an eye witness had told

of champagne on board a battle¬
ship. Several of the clergymen pres¬
ent vigorously denounced the presi¬
dent for the reputed act.
WON'T FIGHT THE TRUST.
Moline Plow Company Decides to Sell
Out to the Combine.
The Moline, Ill., Plow Company,
owning the second largest plow fac¬
tory in the world, has given an option
to New York capitalists which, if
closed within the limit of sixty days,
will bring this concern into the $50,
000,000 plow combine. The company
emplovs 1,000 men and the option is
for upward of $3,0ov,000. The company
has opposed the trust, but will sell
rather than fight it.

HE POISONED WELLS.
Mob of Oklahoma Cattlemen Lynch a
Suspected Farmer.
J. L. Chandler, an old resident farm¬
er of loland, Day county, Oklahoma,
was taken from his home Friday night
presumably by cattlemen and lynched.
For some time there has been trou¬
ble between the farmers and the cat¬
tlemen and during the past few weeks
a great many cattle have died from
poisoned water. Chandler was sus¬
pected and lynched as a warning to
others. The identity ot the lynchers
is not known.
PAYING TELLER SHORT.
Prominent Bank Official In New Or¬
leans Detected in Wrong-Doing.
Samuel Flower, paying teller of the
i-.oernia National bank, was arrested
in New Orleans Saturday by United
States Marshal Fontell and charged
with a shortage of $38,000. The F idel
ity and Depos-- Company, of Balti¬
more, is on Flower’s bond for $25,000.
Flower is a cousin of the late May¬
or Flower and comes from one of - the
most prominent families in the state.
He is a son of the late ex-United
States sub-Treasurer Samuel Flower,
of New Orleans. His bond for $10,000
was promptly signed when he was ar
raigned in the United States court.
GOOD ROADS MOVEMENT.
Great Interest Aroused Over Coming
Meeting at Jackson, Miss.
A great deal of interest is being
aroused over Mississippi in the good
roads movement, and the agitation of
the question will result in much good.
Since the governor’s proclamation a
number of towns and business leagues
have elected delegates to the good
roads convention that is to be held in
Jackson on the 14th and loth of June.
MOTHER AND CHILDREN BURN.
Little Ones Dead and Mother Not Ex¬
pected to Live.
Friday evening the house of Mrs.
Whitsel, a widow living two miles
southeast of Climax, Texas, was burn¬
ed. Her two children, a boy and girl,
aged eight and ten years, respectively,
were fatally burned from the effects of
which both of them died within twelve
hour’s time. The mother was also
badly burned and is not expected to
live.

In the United States supreme court
Monday an opinion was handed down
in the case of Wells vs. the city of Sa
vannah, Ga., involving the question of
the city’s right to tax its own property
when leased to another party. The
supreme court of the state of Georgia
held in favor of the city’s contention
for this right, and Monday’s opinion
upholds that decision on the ground
that the lease in this case amounted to
practically a sale.

Governor Odell Vetoes Bill.
Governor Odell, of New York, hai
vetoed the employers liability bill. He
says the measure is not in the interest
of labor and is too drastically in favor
of the corporation.
