ATLANTA GETS MEETING
Agricultural Commissioners Will
Meet in Georgia.
PURE FOOD LAW EFFECTIVE
Previout to Enactment of Pure Food
Law Georgia Was Dumping Ground
for Impure Food.
Atlanta, Ga.—Commissioner of Agri¬
culture T. G. Hudson, accompanied by
State Chemist R. E. Stallings, have
returned from Jackson, Miss., whore
they have been in attendance upon tho
annual meeting of tho Commissioners
of Agriculture of the Southern States,
which unanimously voted to hold the
1910 meeting in Atlanta.
Commissioner Hudson, as host, will
begin preparations right away for the
entertainment of this distinguished
body and will endeavor to make it
the most successful meeting in the
history of the organization.
According to Commissioner Hudson,
these commissioners reported the In¬
terest in agriculture more acute now
than ever in the history of the south,
and that the most brilliant future for
coming years 011 the farm was held
out.
Commissioner Hudson made the
convention a talk, as did State Chem¬
ist. K. E. Stallings. Dr. Stallings is a
recognized authority on the subject
of Pure Food Legislation, and his re¬
marks on this eutject were attended
with the keenest interest.
He told them how, previous to the
enactment and enforcement of the
Georgia Pure Food Law, this state
was the dumping ground for all sorts
and conditions of feed stuffs, but since
the law went into operation there was
no state in the south bo free from
adulterated feeds and foods as this.
As a result of this law, the sale aiul
feeding of cotton seed meal to work¬
ing stock and dairy herds has rapidly
increased with most satisfactory re¬
sults.
SCHOOL FttS ILLtliAL.
No Charge of Any Kind Can Be Made
in Common Schools.
Atlanta, Ga.—That a fee of any kind
can not be charged legally in the corn
mon schools of the state was set
forth fully in a decision of the su¬
premo court.
The case involving this Important
point was raised in Montgomery coun¬
ty when fourteen children were exlud
ed from the Mount Vernon and Alley
school districts in that county because
their parents refused to pay a m,i
tricuiation f«e of $2.50, charged in the
schools In (haso districts.
Shannon and others, parents of the
excluded children, brought mandamus
proceedings against tho boards of
trustees of the two districts to com¬
pel them to admit the children. It
was contended that the parents were
all residents and tax payers of the
districts, end that as tho schools
were maintained out of the common
school funds they had 110 legal right
to exclude the children.
Judge Martin Issued the mandamus
and the supreme court sustained him.
It wa e held a charge for matricula¬
tion or any other fee could not be
legally imposed as a condition of en¬
trance to the school.
PAHDUNS URANTED.
Prison Commission Grant Few Pa
rolos and Commutations.
Atlanta, Ga.—During tho past week
the prison commission passed on a
large number of applications for clem¬
ency. Paroles were granted three and
commutation to present service to five
others. Fifty-ono petitions were de¬
clined.
Paroles were recommended and ap¬
proved by the governor in the follow¬
ing cases: Charles Swanson, Camp¬
bell county, volnutary manslaughter;
Jsbse Clark, Philip Jemison, Musoc
gee. Commutations were granted in
the following cases; Robert Sheppard,
Floyd county, murder; Will Trumpler,
Richmond county, misdemeanor; Pe¬
ter Williams, Fulton county, gaming;
Clifford West, Muscogee, misdemean¬
or; Charlie Hamilton, Fulton county,
burglary.

Terrell County Farmer Makes Record
of the Year.
Dawson, Ga.—The recent corn con¬
test here demonstrated the fact that
Terrell county farmers could success¬
fully raise this important cereal in
this section, and the experience cf C.
C. Lundav, one of the progressive and
successful farmers in the southeast¬
ern portion of this county, in grow
ing cotton this year proves condu¬
cive ly that Terrell county deserves
the reputation which it has as the
banner county in Georgia for produc¬
ing the fleecy staple. From 12 acres
of land Mr. Lunday has already pick¬
ed and ginned seventeen bales of cot¬
ton, averaging 500 pounds, and he ex¬
pects to gather several more bales
from this field this season.
POPE BROWN NOT A CANDITATE.
State Treasurer Says He Will Not
Run for Governor.
Atlanta, Ga. — State Treasurer J.
Pope Brown set at rest the rumor
which has placed him among pros¬
pective candidates for governor.
“There- is absolutely nothing in it,"
Mr. Brown said. “It is always the
case where a man commits a crime
once that people are inclined to Bus
pect him of the same thing again.”
■Mr. Brown had reference to his can
didacy for governor in 1906.

Baptist Convention at Dublin Hears
Good Report.
Dublin, Ga.—The Baptist State Con¬
vention adjourned to meet in Eiberton
next year. The report of Dr. Willing¬
ham, corresponding secretary of the
foreign mission board, was jead.
The funds amounted to $460,797, of
which Georgia contributed $69,514. He
asked $80,000 from Georgia for the
next year. He said that 2,905 per¬
sons were converted last year and
that there is a foreign membership
of 16,590. ..
22,000 BALLS RELtlVED.
At Dawson Warhouses More Is
Expected.
Dawsn, Ga.—Local warehouses have
received hy wagon during the pres¬
ent aeasou 22,000 bales of cotton, and
will probably receive a few thousand
more before the end of the year.
While these receipts are somewhat
less than in previous yeara, yet ;hey
demonstrate the fact that a good d ei.i
of cotton has been produced in this
section, for there are warehouses in
three other towns in the county#

NOTES.
It. goes without saying that, every
former should keep enough poultry to
supply his own needs. Further than
that it depends upon his convenience
to market.
What is a good hen? One that
lays 150 eggs a year is good. One
that lays 200 is among the very best.
The average farm hen probably lays
100 eggs a year.
Bo careful about introducing new
members into tlio flock. It is an ex¬
cellent way to introduce disease, if
they must come, keep them in a quar¬
antine pen for a few weeks.
Turn the poultry into the orchard
in early fall. They will destroy many
an insect that has made arangements
for his winter’s hoard.
Poultry combined with the small
fruits, has been a paying business
with many, and now more are going
to combine the “hundred-hen” idea,
with dairy work, the eggs, and but¬
ter fat (bringing in money all the
time.
Such a combine would he profitable,
no doubt, when rightly managed as
the milk would be of great value for
the layers; in short the hen business
is profitable, either alone, or in com¬
bination with other things when man.
aged well, All it is one that will
bring in cash each week, and oftener
it sales are more frequent.

TO LAUNDER MOHAIR.
You can launder shepherd's plaid
mohair, if you like, and without hurt¬
ing it in the least. There are only
two little tricks of the trade to be
ruastered. The first lies in the qual¬
ity of the soap, and the second in the
heating of the iron. Get some white
soap of « good quality; it contains
borax, which is cleansing, and which
adds crispness to woolen materials,
and it veil! not fade the colors.
When ironing mohair a very even
heat is required; hot irons; while
they may not appear to scorch the
fabric, will rot It, so that it will split
or crock on the first wearing.—Bos
