Bulging Vaults of State Banks
Show Prosperity.
$108,1)00,090 ON DEPOSIT
® an h Statements Show a Gain of One
Hundred Per Cent in Cash Wealth.
Result of 15 Cent Cotton.
Atlanta, Ga—In approximately 500
state banks doing business in Geor
gia today, there is deposited to the
credit of Georgians nearly 0100,000,
000, an increase in deposit aefcounts
of more than 10-0 per cent in twdlve
months.
A splendid illustration of the de¬
ference between 9 and 15-cent cot¬
ton: *
This marvelous increase in actual
cash wealth in the state is indicated
in the official bank statements how
ing the condition of the Georgia ban
at the close of business on November
16, the majority of which have been
received in the office of State Treas¬
urer and State Batik Examiner J.
Pope Brown.
The last official statement of 1909
bore the date of November 27 sdme
ten days later than that of the state
ment called for this year, but toe
dates are close enough to admit of
interesting comparison.
The total deposits in state banks
November 27, 1908, were $46,970,-
509.68. The accurate figures for 1909
wil not be available for several weeks
yet, as all of the statements have riot
yet been received, and the compila¬
tion of them is a tremendous work
after they are all' in hand.
But from the figures furnished the
bank examiner it has been found* that
the total deposits subject to check in
128 state hanks, about one-fourth of
the entire number, aggregate $25,717,
053. These 128 banks were selected
at random, and each of t^em Is in a
different Georgia county; so it will
be seen that the state's prosperity is
widespread and general.
Upon the basis of these figures,
which do not include deposits in the
shape of time certificates, amounting
to a considerable sum, it is apparent
that the total deposits in Georgia's
state banks will reach the flpuro stat¬
ed—nearly $100,000,000.
In adidtion to the foregoing Geor¬
gia has about 110 national banks. In
1908, November 27, the total deposits
in these national hanks approximated
$30 000,000. There is every indication
that their deposits have Increased in
like proportion, and that the total
cash deposits in Georgia today, or
upon November 16, to be more accu¬
rate, aggregated the magnificent sum
of In $160,000,000^ Georgians have «. just
other worts,
about twice as much available cash
today as they had twelve months ago,
all of which is a remarkable tribute
to the agricultural productivity of the
state. •yt
This growth is not confined to any
one section. The hank whose depot",
its do not show a heatlhy increase
take it wherever you wilt in tho
state, is a rarity. Naturally, however,
the greatest percentage of Increase
is found in some sections of South
Georgia, where crops met with no un
favorable conditions, and there was a
full yield of cotton ready for the mar
ket at highest cash price.

Thi* state Holds the Palm for Illicit
Distilling.
Washington, D. C.—The annual re¬
port of the commissioner of Internal
revenue discloses almost startling
facts bearing on the prohibition law,
which Is supposed to be In effect in
Georgia. This report furnish.s the
very interesting Information that the
federal government through the bu¬
reau of Internal revenue, issued re¬
tail liquor licenss for the fiscal year
ending June 30 of the present year
to J.,091 dealers. But this is not all.
Li prohibition Georgia the report dis¬
closes the fact that 18 wholesale li¬
quor dealers' licenses were Issued dur¬
ing the past year.
A resort to the records of the com¬
missioner of Internal revenue shows
that there has been comparatively lit¬
tle diminution In the Issuance of fed
for the dispensation of (
oral license
booze since the operation of state¬
wide prohibition. In 1907, which was
prior to the enactment of the state
prohibition law, the number of retail
liquor dealers licensed by the federal
government numbered 1,427, and the
wholesalers were 105. in that year
the retailers of malt liquor author¬
ized to do business in the state were
only 207. Prohibition laws seein to
make this class of wet goods dispen¬
sers thrive. Last year the retail malt
liquor dealers authorized to do busi
ness in the state had reached the
grand total of 1,521. From a group
of 207 to more than 1,500 within a
period of two years is surely going
some. liquor dealers , -
But the 18 wholesale
and the 1,091 retailers, who made a
mockery of prohibition in Georgia last
year, do not tell the whole story. The
report of the commissioner of inJcr
nal revenue discloses the fact that
twe grain distilleries were registered
In the state last year, and, in addi¬
tion, one more was operated.
Georgia holds the palm for illicit
(■’-tilling, while North Carolina runs
L close second. In Georgia last year
'394 illicit distilleries were seized and
623 destroyed. In North Carolina ^12
were seized and 374 destroyed. Ala¬
bama is third in the race, with 17*
seized and 231 destroyed. There were
24 registered distilleries reported for
seizure iu North Carolina.
AS AN tVIDtNCE OF PROGRESS.
Comptroler Wright to Prepare State¬
ment for the Public...
Atlanta, Ga.—Comptroller General
W A. Wright has determined to pre¬
pare a statement which will give
some idea of the marvelous increase
in the values of Georgia tarm land.,
within the last few years. He b“
lieves it will make a showing, not
.
but of . , importance
only of interest,
and value to the state, both as an
evidence of the steady progress al
that which , , may
ready made and of
be expected in the near future.
PLANNING IMPROVEMENTS.

Something" very like this did once
happen. Tho Spanish Ambassador

that diversion known as the hoax.
The English fleet was lytog off
Southamton. -Hook, then a young
man, knew many of, the younger of¬
ficers. He formed his scheme and
one morning a launch set out from-
the fleet and drew up at the quay.
In this launch was he who purport¬
ed to he the Spanish Ambassador,
in almost royal robes, arrived two
days before the expected time. The
Mayor of Southampton, who was to
receive the Spanish envoy, was
greatly flustered. It -was all so sud¬

foot, some mounted, were called out.
The bells were rung. The Ambas¬

After it Was over and the Spanish
