Bagly iwon the .gold medal and a purse for the best turned score. The competition was genuine, and Mrs. Bagly's closest rival was a girl of 19, daughter of a wealthy farmer and horseman. The women were required to hitch their teams and break lea or grass land. Each plowed a rood of ground and twenty completed the task, all following in the furrow be hind the plow. Atlanta, Ga. — Upon consultation with the state treasury officials Gov¬ ernor Brown ascertained that he could still further increase the amount to be paid to the school teach¬ ers of the state at once. Upon the strength of the assur¬ ances received from the treasury de¬ partment, he ordered additional pay¬ ments amounting to 1(1 per cent ot the school fund, making a total of about 76 per cent of the 1909 school fund of $2,250,001), to be paid out during 1909. Every county in the state is now entitled to receive up to 76 per cent of Its share ot the school fund for the year, and nothing but failure on the part of the county school commis¬ sioner to send in the required state¬ ments will prevent them from getting The total payments from the 1909 school fund for the year will aggre¬ gate *1,710,000, provided all the coun¬ ties take what is coining to them and what the treasury is now ready to pay upon demand. Nothing like this result has before been known in the history of the state school system, with an indebt¬ edness to the teachers of only 24 per cent carried over into the following year. And the indications ar# now that they will not have to wait long after the first ot the year for the bal¬ ance of their money. Governor llrown signed warrants tor the payment of an additional $ 1 , 000 to each ot the district agricultu¬ ral schools of the state, and the money has been sent to them by Ex¬ ecutive Secretary Brantley. This brings the total amount paid to the district agricultural schoold during the year up to approximately $9,500 each, or within $500 of the amount which it was contemplated by the legislature they should have,when it made the additional appropriation of $ 2,000 for each of them at last summer's session. Thus each of the schools has re ceived during the year $7,500 from inspection fees on oils and fertilizers and $ 2,000 direct from the state treas ury as the result of a special appro¬ priation. TmniiHlllll THK STATE. John It. Bradley, the financial backer of Dr. Frederick A. Cook, Is in Augusta, stopping at one of the tourist hotels. He says that he came to Augusta to get a few days' rest and he refused to enter into the Po¬ lar controversy further than to say that he does not know the where¬ abouts of Dr. Cook. From the tone of his voice he does not seem to care where Dr. Cook is at present. He was asked the question: If he thought Dr. Cook would still produce convinc¬ ing proof of his discovery of the pole and to this he replied that he did not care to talk about the matter, aH the polar controversy was past history to him. He said that he Had lots more interest in the polar hunting than in polar exploring. Mr. Bradley is ac¬ companied by his wife and little child. The Ueorgia troops will go Into camp in May and July. Word to that effect was received from the war de¬ partment by Adjutant General A. J. Scott. The first tour of Instruction will begin May 19 at Fort Screven, and will last for a week.
