JESUP, GEORGIA JULY, 1, 1910.
The average Wayne county far
mer is not losing Any sleep on ac¬
count of the political situa.ion.
Referring to the “gubernator¬
ial situation” an exchange apt¬
ly says the people are returning
from insanity to sanity.
The only thing the people
know about the standing of
some of the candidates is the
fact that they are standing for
office.
In his report, the state school
commissioner gives a list of twen¬
ty-seven counties in each of
which the last school census
ikows over two hundred illiterate
white children. We note that
Wayne is not among the number.
Honorable Peyton M. Hawes of
Elberton, cadidato for State
Treasurer spent Friday in Jesup
meeting his friends and further¬
ing his candidacy. In this issue
of the News will be found his
announcement and we cannot too
strongly commend him to the
people of our County. Mr. Hawes
is a leading Banker and Financier
of his homo City and wo know
him to be capable, energetic and
coascicntous. He has served his
County and District faithfully
a»d with distinct credit and honor
in b*#h branches of the General
ibly, and we predict his
orer-whelming nomination at the
polls ia the coming Primary.
In a one sided game here Sat¬
urday, Jesup defeated Bethel by
the score of 7 to 2. The game was
slow’ and uninteresting.
The team failed to bring their
pitcher, and on account °f ;ame
refused tp play, with Lester the
regular pitcher for Jesup pitching
Jesup conceded to them, and Roy
Breen pitched. Jesup’s team was
t ho most crippled up team it had
ever placed 911 a diamond. But
the Bethel team got licked just
the satpe.
