Last Thursday the darkey element
j ,it the Fusnacn was thrown into a con

ment t Imp Joe Reed had shot Peter
Gihtwell at that place, both negros.
In a short time Reed broke to make
bis escape, but before au hour passed
nearly eveiy negro about the Furnace
j started armed with an evident intent
!to capture Reed dead or live, which
r they succeeded in doing mostly in tho
latter condition. Sam Cobb and Dick
Jones were the parties who shot and
catupttired Reed. In this and as to
its justification Reed and Ids captors’
evidence differs The latter state
that lie turned on them and was pro
paring to slmot; Reed admits having
tho pistol in his hand, but denies in
tending or attempting to shoot—only
had it in his' mind to surrender. Reed
is probably fatally shot; one shot, a 38
Smith & VVerson, taking effect in and
breakibg his jaw bono; the in his left
breast and arm. Caldwell is not at all
seriously shot, but will be all right soon
The trouble appears to lie that Cald
well lrtd made a remark about. Reed’s
wile, Mi l Rood going to bis house at
tempted to make him retract it. lie
had gone into Caldwell’s house and
assaulted him but failing his intent be
want into tho yard, calling Caldwell
nut dclideratcly shot him twice, when
Calmvcll fell. Caldwell is one of the
good, inoffensive brothers, which ap
pears to have so stirred the colored
population against Reed.

had boon discovered and captured on

in DeKitld county. Ala., by the pre

names of the parties said to have been
engaged in the business. Any one,
almost, could detect the coins as spu
rious, It’s hard times, money scarce,
and, no doubt, onr mountain neighbors
badly needed a little ciiculuting medi
um, and as it did not appear to circu
its; any lather than among themselves
there could be no big crime in it.
They had molds for nicklos and dollars
only. Eleven dollars and sevent-five
cents in nicklos were found. Some of
the parties have absconded.
suppressing old bachelors
A bill lias been introduced into tbc

But by forcing •icm to take a “better
