While tin; county politics are in
a stew we should not forget our
town officers. Trenton should
have an ad valorum tax for street
purposes.
The News will be edited and
controlled by the present manage
ment until we give notice to the
public that some “outsider” has
superceded us.
Is the Dade County News re
ceiving the support it merits. In
proportion to the supporr given
just in that degree will your coun
ty paper improve.
We have established a branch
office at Fort Payne. By rehash
ing our Dade 'publication we can
reissue at Fort Payne under the
name Fort Payne News.
An organization, known as the
Trenton Land <fe Improvement
Company, would, if properly man
aged result in a sale of town lots
and cause permanent improve-,
meats to grace cur town.
The Fort Payn" News man, who
recently edited the Dade County
Eaglehas all the requirements for
making a thorough newspaper man,
namely personified cheek, nerve
and gall. He litterally copied the
Salutatory of the News, and sent
about fifty papers to our town for
the people to read. We pass.
—
Chattanooga is making arrange
ments to build an incline up Cam
eron hill. The Chattanooga Tin. •.
has already mapped it out on paper.
An incline on swinging ropes will
also be srroclied, 1,000 feed high,
from Cameron hill to Lookout
mountain. Will some body t.dj
us what the Daily Times and Chat
tanoog# are not inclined to do.
Whatever position we may take j
upon any question, will bo after
mature deliberation and a sincere
conviction that we are in the right.
What is once published under
these circumstances will never be
retracted at the instance of any
individuals who may feel aggrieved
thereby. Recognizing thu old la
tin adage, ‘ humanum est or rare,’’
we do not take upon ourselves tilt
assumption of infallibility.
No man who has committed a
wrong within the limit of om cir
culation, need expect forbear
ance at our hands when the wrong
is once detected. We recognize
the interest of n’o individual as
paramount to that of a whole com
munity or county. While we may
indulge in a few harmless jokes,
and make use of a few personali
ties. it is w ith no ill will to anyone ;
and we pity the foci in his igno
rance who cannot take a little
thrust : n the spirit it may be given
C onsole yourself with the - hilo
aophical thought that while you
are “under the rod” you furnish a
little amusement to your fellow -
men.
A HINT TO CANDIDATES.
We present the following facts
for the.consideration of <ho voters of
Dade County: A certain individ
ual announces himself as a candi
date for State Senator in the Walker
county Messenger, and narates
h‘s candidacy around many of his
neighbors, but entirely ignores his
county paper. What is the con
conclusion? Does not the gentle
man know of the existence of a
county paper? Yes, he must rec
ognize that fact, as our paper has
been out only three weeks, and in
ime ih( old men an<
women have learned to appreciate
it, the young lady to sigh for it,
the boys caii at our office before
we are out of press, and even the
babies cry for the Dado County
News.
Does he not know that Dade
county is on important constitu
ency in the 44th Senatorial Dis
trict? Oh yes: surely with all his
boasted knowledge of geography:
and with a constant vision
of the map before Lis eyes, the
gentleman must know that it takes
Dade, Walker, and Catoosa to con
stitute the 44th District.
Perhaps the “gentleman candi
date” is fearful of the result of
putting his name before the pec-j
pie of his own county, and distrusts •
the Dade county ballot box.
Not wishing to do an injustice
to such a worthy gentleman, as a
priorbility of anorher reason sug
gests itself to our mind We> J
therefore, presume it, is upon the
lost grounds that the gentleman
fails to announce his name in our
paper? Namely, that owing to
financial distress he is unable to
pay the five dollars necessary for
his announcement?
Now, if this be the care, with it
feeling emanating from a purely
charitable heart, and as one who
considers poverty no bar to civil
office, tender him a whole page of
our paper for his announcement,
and platform.
Such as wo have we will give in
to him

JAY GOT D
On last Tuesday by r*pc viu ;
vif.i! b n, we took the accommoda
tion for Chattanooga to fill an en
gagement with the great millionair,
Jay Gould. It was near 4 ohiock
when Mr. Gould arrived from Mem
phis, aud our patience was about
expended, and out* desire to meet
an old friend buried in impatience;
but when Jay storied oft his pri
vate car and saluted us with a fa
miliar slap on the shoulder, the
frown relaxed from the editors
broad and inteligent brow, and the
journalist Was himself again.
After a few common-place re
marks about old times etc., Jay
ashAl if we would not take a little
prim • old Kentucky straight ; and
i being a little fatigued and tolerably
dry. we accepted the offer, and
stoped around an old box car at
Cravens and— Before emerging
from behind the car we had Jay’s
name on our subscription list, and
i a quarter for three months sub"
! seriptionin advance.
YYII, it was right hard for Jay
to make up his mind to let us go.
But after much persuasion wo
boarded our train for home, while
be took the belt road on his way
to the point. Jay was ascending
the point as we were rounding i;
along the river* and running al
most at a parallel line. Jay. waved
his silk hat as long as wo were in
eight.
It is hard tor friends to thus
meet and part so soon.

made some telling points. He was
intern pled by Tom Reed,of Maine,
the boss man of the republcan «irD.
who desired to know in his no
ous and drawling way ;
Cleveland had not written ;
letter relative to the exten.
the cival service law. Mr. ( ..
ents promply responded yes, and
added in a suggestive way that
Mr. Cleveland did not say “burn
this letter.” This quick and to] 1 -
ingjretort was greeted with laugh
ter and applause on the democratic
side, while the Maine statesman
could only give and take it. The
speech was well put and well re
cievorl, and showed Mr. Oilments
to be a ready and effective debater.
It is rumored that J. H. Corput
will become a candidate for Tax
Assessor. If this is true, the man
that bead-? him will have to get up
fhreo or four hours earlier in the
morning than the old man, leave
off hi--socks and shoes and “light
