Tatum went to Atlanta to enter the Geo-igia Legislature they little dreamed that their respective offices to which they were legally elected could have been success fully claimed by another, hut such was a fact. The returns of the vote from Dade county showed that T, J. Lumpkin had received a majority of votes sufficient for his election to the House, and that he had received 450 votes in Dade for Senator, which vote also elected I him to the Senate. I. was only a j few minutes before, the I • gislature j was too meet that T. J. Lumpkin, then in the Cap'tol, ascertained the I above fact, and he had onlv to Be loot in which House of the Geor gia Legislature he would take his seat, and enter upon the duties of his chosen office, it was to late for a contest and no power on earth could have prevented him from urging his claim access fully. Who 1 can imagine the feelings of a man j who had thrust before him such tempting fruit which he dare not touch. Unlike Madam Eve, “Dock” did not take a “nip,” but withstood the temptation and yet remains in the Garden of Eden—the high es teem of his fellow citizens. We could fancy a little scene, had T. .J. Lumpkin gone into either House and with election returns in his hands, demanded hist name put upon the toll of members and claifned his s< at—hut he didn’t. (1121 itia $1 £•£•!'
