Chicago, Oct. 30.—A burglar se
cured an entrance to the residence of
George M. High, 66 Bellevue place,
on Monday night, and seeing his im
age in a large plate glass mirror, be
came so badly rallied that be drew
nis revolver. The man in the mirror
did likewise, and in a moment the
uair bb-z -d away at each other with
a precision that was hard on the
mirror. Mr. High and his family
were at dinner on the floor below,
uid when tbe shooting was heard,
ogether with the noise of breaking
glass, there was a sudden loss uf appe
tite.
Mr. High grabbed a poker ard
headed a procession up the stairway,
and when the large rear bedroom on
'he ec >nd floor was reached nothiug
was found but the broken mirror and
an open window.! By this timo the
whole neighborhood was in an up
roar. Private telephones were set ai
work, and the East Chicago avenue
station patrol wagon with a load of
police was summoned. An investi
gation showed that some one had
placed a ladder against the rear wall
»f the house and effected an entrance
hy forcing the window. The room
door was open, and the light from
ihe hall fell upon the mirror in such
a way as to give the impression that
some one was approaching through
ihedoor. The burglar was a desper
ate character, and it was not his fault
that he did not commit murder.

On Trial Tor Shooting His Brother
BkijiGEPOBT, Oct. 30.-Edward J.
Walker, charged witli killing his
brother in Bartley Ryle’s stora in
Stamford last August, was put on
rial in the Superior court to-day.
Assistant State’s Attorney Garter in
opening the case said that he would
be able to prove beyond doubt that
Edward shot his brother at tbe above
*ime and place. Ex-Slate’s Attornev
Olmstad, for the defence, said that
the prisoner was Innocent of the
crime, and that the defence will be
aole to show that J«m<*s Walker was
killed by a shot fired by Bartley
Ryle; that no ill feeling existed be
tween the brothers; that both were
soh» ron the night of the fatal shot,
and that Edward had no revolver in
his possession at the time.
Several witnesses were examined
for ihe State, the most important be
ing Bartley liyle, the proprietor of
the st're, who related the story of
tee quarrel between the Walker
! hrottiers, alleging that they were ir
toxicated, and that James was killed
in a row. On cross-examination he
emphatically denied that he had a
hand in the shooting. John Ryle,
aged 11, son of the above witness,
lestifi-d that he »aw the shooting,
ami that Edward was the o *e who
tired the fat,>l shot.
