Cur FPublic Scheols,
Eprror BaxNir: It is often urged that
asystem of public instruction, and es
pecially oury, isopposed to private and
permanent schools, if so,it would certain
ly be better for Georgia as present to
withhold such aid, for the mmount con
tributed is utterly worthless. If not sup
plemented largely by private patronage.
The whole amouut will only pay the pri
mary teacher for five cv six weeks!
gervices, It is evident that @ school, how
able the teacher may be, organized and
conducted after the mamer of our com
'mon schools, with pupils go poorly train
’ed and so little accustomed to study as
children must b who attend schoolibut a
’few weeks in & year mugt be a failure
compared with children who attend
school eight to ten months to the year.
Then it is patent if the schools e suc
cessinl they must be supported mainly
ly by private patranage.
We have some so-called teachers who
pretend to run schools three months of
the year for what the public pays them;
but everybody knaws that these people
are'utterly unfit for the business of feach
ing, and are everywhere proving a dis
grace to the profession and a positive
curse to the communities patronizing
then. The very . fact = that
they will depend upon a mode of living
go precious as positive proof of their abil
ity to teach. They are generally wanting
in education and true stanima of charac”
ter. But the fact is, these schools do nct
last more than seyen ov eight weeks,
The would-ba teachers collect more pu
pils than aven an experienced instructor
could possibly manage for a few weeks
[ until their pupils and patrons learn who
they are, they stand awhile with more
than any body can do. I can at this mo
ment point to more than ono public
schoo. teacher who could not for their
lives write o deeent letter of a dozen
lines. Tt is urged that the best teachers
possible are secured, and that the choice
of the people is regarded. The first in
stance is not a fact. There are many
young women and young ien - throngh
our connfry who are fully capable and
willing to teach our schools ‘or a liberal
compensation, but these are excluded
from the profession by a worthless class
of underbidders.lt ¢hould be the'purpose
of those who control the distribution
of the public funds to see that the com
petent teachers be admitted.
1t should be the aim of our educational
leaders to.devise means to better provide
for the education of the youth of our
conntry. The day has and should come
when good teachers are no longer ron
gidered mere toilers, but are recognized
s Teaders of thouglly and’ nou'ders of o,
