all of whom are married except
two, and they are all among the

He will be buried at Maecadonia

Buchanan Asa Town. '
We are aprised of the faq ¥hu
some people give Buchanan a bad
name. We have heard it intima
ted, and we may as well say as
serted, that Buchanan would nev
er be a town worth anything, on
account of there being so much
prejudice existing between her
citizens. We say that this is not
the case with our town. Of course:
every small town will have some
desensions, because so long as
human beings are mortal and apt
to do and say things wrong, there
will be some bad feeling in every
town. And that is the case with
Buchanan. But our county towrs
is begining to see the folly of
division and are becoming more
and more united on things that
pertain to the advancement and
prosperity of our town. |
Our citizens are begining to see
that while their sister towns are
building up, that there is a bright
prospect for Buchanan. And
again to the unity of our people.
When one of our fellow townsman
needs help, all turns out and helps
him. Just the other day the lum
ber kiln of Mr. C. W. Ault caught
on fire, and being situated near
his planing mill, it took hard
‘work on the part es our citizens to
‘keep the fire out of the mill. We
have never seen a set of men work
so hard to check the fire as did
the citizens of Buchanan. Well,
you may say that the stopping of
the fire was nothing more than
their duty; certainly it was mnot.
But it fairly iHustrates the good
feeling that exists between us. |

OBITUARY. ‘
A gloom hangs over Kramer and
vicinity, while we mourn the loss
of our friend Mrs. Dr. Phillipps.
- Near nine o’clock last Saturday
night, May 24th, inst., the shad
owy Angel of Death took from the
home eircle, this loved one, whe
for thirteen years had reigmed
there as wife, mother and friend.
- This good woman, more famil
'iarly known among her many
{riends and relatives as ¢ Bettie'’
was ouly in her thirty eighth
year and had lived in the glorious
hope of the christian religion for
eighteen years; the blessed conso
lation of which she often spoke,
while on her death-bed.
Though suffering from the un
speakable agonies which caused
her sudden death. She reminded
ns of the ‘rest’ awaiting her. Ad
monishing her children and speak
ing words of comfort to these
around her; still bearing the ex
cruciating pain with chrietian
fotitude, and in the end sinking
to sleep as quietly as a tired
child.
Being the wife of our eminent
and highly esteemed physician,
Dr. M. K. Phillipps, she was well
known and leaves many bereaved
friends, but the bereavement of
the husband and the three moth
erless children ean not be penned.
We can only tenderthem our heart
felt sympathies and tell them to
*Look above the clouds that gather;
There 1s light arvound the throne.”
. She was a true wife, a devoted
mother, and her love for her home
and her comstant presence there
was a crowning virtue that will
make her more sadly missed. |
“Safe in the arms of Jesus, ‘
Safe in his gentle breast;
There by his love o're shaded,
Gently her soul shall rest.”

Mr. G. W. Gentry, who has been
on an extended trip to Texas, re
turned home last Sunday and was
in Buchanan last Tuesday. It is
quite interesting to hear him tell
about his journey in the ‘‘Lone
Star State.”” We hope to print a
letter from Mr. G. shortly.
Mr. L, M. Speight who lives a
few miles east of town was in to
see nus last Tuesday. He says that
the old cotton stalks are putting
out on his place. This is some
thing new. He saysit has been
many years since he saw a winter
warm enough for the old cotton
stalks to put out in the spring.
Messrs Steward & Hamrick had
the misfortune of getting their
saw mill burned last Saturday; ‘
which was situated two miles
west of town. They were not at
the mill at the time it caught, the
hands having gquit for Saturday
evening. The fire was discovered
about 1 o’clock and when the
hands reached the mill, after the
alarm, it was too late to save any
thing under the mill shed. Con
sequently they saved nothing but
the lumber that was on the yard.
The loss is estimated to be nearly
one thousand dollars.
