A Remarkble Book By Rev. T. Le-
Witt Talmage. D. D,
This is said to be a year es re
markable books, but doubtless the
most remarkable that will appear
for some time to come is Rev. T.
DeWitt Talmage’'s new work on
the‘‘Life of Christ’’ and ‘‘Pales
tine and its people.”’ BSome ida
of what the book contains and how
it was prepared may be obtained
by reading the following extract
from the Doctor’s preface:
“In my home, on the Atlantic, on
Mediterranean, on camel's back,
on mule‘s back, on horseback, un
der chandelier, by dim candle in
tent on Lake Galilee,in convent,
at Bethel where Jacob’s pillow was
stuffed with dreams, and the an
gels of the ladder landed; at the
brook Elah, from which little Da
vid picked up the ammunation of
five smooth stones, four more than
were needed for crushing like an
egg-shell the skull of Goliath; in
the Valley of Ajalon, over which,
at Joshna’s command, Astronomy
halted; on the plain of Esdraelon, |
thie battle-field of ages, its long
red flowers suggestive of the blood
dashed to the bits of the horses’
‘bridles; amid the shattered ma
sonry of Jerico, in Jerusalem that
overshadows all other cities in re
miniscence, at Cana where plain
water became festal beverage, on
Calvary whose aslan and ruptured
rocks still show the effects of the
earthquake at the awful hemor
rage of the five wonndy that pur
chased the world’s rescue, and
with my ha nd mittensd Yrom the
storm, or wet trom the Jordan, or
bared to the sun, or gliding over
smotu table, this book has been
written.”
This book will certainly be
wortk reading and preserving. It
is not only a life of Christ from
an entirely new stand-point, but
it is also a very interesting history
of a country and people who occu
py a prominent place in the
thoughts and feelings of all Chris
tian nations. The large number
of excellent pictures of places and
scenery in the Holy Land with
which the volume is illusterated,
give ita speeial enterest and value.
We cannot all go to Palestine, but
this elegant book, through the aid
of its pictures and Dr, Talmage’s
wonderiul discriptions accompa
nying thom, brings Palestine. to
onr very doors. The book is in
deed a positive necessity toa pro
per understanding of the Bible
accounts of placss and evets. We
can undergtand and appreciate
Bible history all the better when
we see photographic representa
tions of the places where this his
tory was made. “FROM MAN
GER TO THRONE” maks a new
era in the literature of Bible
Lands, and we are not suprised to
learn that the demand for the
book is phenomenal. It issold on
the exclusive teritory basis, and
persens desiving to secure agen
ciez will find the publishers’ an
nouncemant ir nevt week’s issue.
We hear that those who have
had watches repaired by the New
Wateh Maker at the Tallapoosa
Jewelry store are highly pleased.
Take your watch and clock work
to him. He is an expert. Don’t
lei some ‘‘betch’’ work on it and
ruin it, Mr Horine guarantees
satisfaction. Corner Iload ave
nue and Mill strest.
