If General Gordon does not answer to
The call of the Tribuue-of-Rome, then he
will have “skulked,” will he? Anyway,
>:l.e Tribune asked the General to come
forth and wound up by saying “Do not
skulk.”
Is it a digression from Jeffersonian de¬
mocracy for the people to declare their
lights? Have they got to leaye it all with
.politicians to say what Jeffersonian de¬
mocracy is, and then trot right along at
their ’.eels?
The Colored Farmers’ Alliance, which
met in Atlanta a few days ago, declared
rthey were Republicans. The White
lFavtners’ Alliance, which is to meet in
in a few days, should declare
Ahat they are only working to have true
Jeffersonian democracy put into force,
and that they are opposed to negro su¬
premacy.
.'id the Tribuue-of-Kome vote for Ev
■erett, the Democratic nominee? Did the
Atlanta Journal vote for Livingston, the
Democratic nominee? If they didn’t,
then why so much racket from them
; a hoot a third party? If they did, then
why so much abuse upon these gentle
vuei they helped to elect? Are they not
upholding pure Jeffersonian democracy?
You must not tail f-at.whh, this
for publishing letters , that do not
“zactly” suit you. To do so shows a very
narrow contracted mind. If we were to
publish only such letters us exactly suit¬
ed r.s, there wouid be but few letters pub¬
lished in the Batunkb-Messkncikb that
, would suit all our readers. We are not
publishing only just such matter as suits
us, or any one, two or three men, but fov
all the people.
The Dallas News gives the ‘following
wholesome advice, which should be heed¬
ed by the people of every community:
“The city papers are all right if you want
them, but there -is the local paper that
advertises your business, your schools,
your churches, ycui numerous societies,
sympathizes with you in your afflictions
aud rejoices in your prosperity, In
shoif, it is the local paper that mentions
the thousand and one items in which you
are interested during the year, and which
you do not find in the city papers. Sub
scribe for your home paper and pay for it
.
.iiu advance.’’

WACO ITEMS.
The fail term of the Wacohigh school is
t
in full blast. We have every reason to hope
that the matriculation of this institution
of learning will not be leas than one hun¬
dred in the near future. Prof. Stubbs,
than whom there is no better tutor, si:»
in the executive chair of the institution,
and he is the right man in the right
place.
The Third Quarterly Conferonce of the
Buchanan circuit will be held iu the Li.
E. church, South, at this place ou Satur¬
day beforo the first Sabbath in August,
The inside of this church has recently
been painted and a new organ placed
in it. What melodious nmsic we have!
The Protestant Methodist brethren, of
Waco, have just completed their new
parsonage. It is a beauty. I know that
we should not covet, but I can’t help en¬
vying Dr. Henderson in Iris comfortable
quarters, when I consider my own crude
domicile.
So far as your Uncle Calhoun can ascer¬
tain, all of the people of our little city are
in the enjoyment of good health. Physi¬
cians have but little to do. This all comes
from the fact that we all use the Waco
mineral springs water. These waters are
not only conducive to good health, but
the many cures of scrofula, scurvy, gran
ulated eyes, and other diseases that have ,
been effected by the use of these
disease killing and health restoring wa
ters is simply wonderful.
A new hotel for the accommodation
of visitors to our town is much need. I
wonder why our enterprising business
men do not take some steps towards erect¬
ing a first-class hotel in Waco.
Mr. Kobt. Parker, General Manager of
the Wnco wagon & Buggy Factory, of
this place, has nearly completed said fac
tory.
Mr. J. T. Copeland recently moved
from Birmingham to this place. He and
his faimily are quite an acquisition to
Waco.
Miss Bessie Jones, of waco. is in Atlan¬
ta visiting friends.
Miss Tursey Johnson, of this place, is
on a visit to her sister in Villa Rica.
Mi9s Inez Baker, of St, Augustine, Fla.,
is visiting her mother In waco.
Mij£. Dura Aderfiolt, has charge of a
music class at Cooksville, Ga.
We understand that the Baptist breth¬
ren of waco will soon place a new organ
in their church.
Mr. C. R. Allen and Mrs. John A. webb.
of Gainesville, Ga., were on a visit to their
mother, Mrs. Dr. Edmondson, a few days
since. They have returned to their home
and friends at Gainsville.
Mr. Earl Moon, of Felton, was iu our
town yesterday.
Mr. w. w. Heaton, of waco, has just
returned from the Atlanta Business Col¬
lege. He has his graduation diploma.
Mr. H. is now prepared for business.
Rev. Mr. Rowan, oneof Tallapoosa’s di¬
vines, preached us a fine sermon from
first Psalm last Sunday.
Dr. J. C. Edmondson is on a business
trip to Tallapoosa iu the interest of the
N. G. L. & T. Co., this week, we always
miss the Dr. when he is not iu our midst.
Many strangers can be seen in our town
of late, we consider this a good omen.
The Ladies’ Aid Society of the M. E.
church South, of waco, has taken the
right step.
A peep at the Giand Jury of Haialson
county will satisfy anyone that that au
gnst body of venerable gentlemen is com
posed of that kind of material that would
do honor to any county, aud wo are
selfish enough to think that waco’s repre¬
sentatives are by far the best looking geu
tlemen in that honorable body, to-wit:
F. C. Johnson and uucle R. C. Price, or
Uncle Dick, as he is familiarly called.
That is certainly a beautiful avenue
that Dr. Edmondson and Mr. James Beall
have recently opened from Bowdon street
to the mineral springs.
I think that the young gentry of waco
would do well to keep their eyes on Mr.
John Jones. That gentleman was seen
last Sunday gallanting two of waco’s lady
beauties along spring avenue and the
smile that pervaded Johnnie’s benevolent
face was certainly attractive. This re¬
minded me, Mr. Editor, of the eld adage
of the thorn between two roses. If this
act really means cake and sillabub, I will
say no more about it, for ’ if I will hold
my tongue I may stand a chance to get
6ome of the cake and sillabub. Don’t
you and our Bro. Dennis like such things?
If y ou do, I will keep you posted.
From year
Uncle Calhoun.
