CORRESPONDENCE.
To The Third Party.
Kn. Banner-Messenger.—A s I have
been rtsked by quite a number of our best
citizens to express mv views on the third
party, l take the liberty to answer once
for all that I am conscitutously opposed
to the third party, for in the grand old
state of Georgia there is no room for the
third party, and in my judgement if the
Alliance attempts to set it up, it will lie
ground into powder and blown out of ex¬
istence by tho ideal windslet A'dlance
ni4n. Stick to tho principles and main
u\ its integrity and unity, aud eulight
m. its membership so they will be qnati
tied to act their part well in politics as
well as other matters effecting their gen¬
era', good. Yes; I am a democrat from
principle and not from policy, and now I
.'eel it my duty to sound the note of warn¬
ing to be on the watch tower, for it will
soon lie said that the Alliance is very
prolific of demagogues. Yes; politics is
science of government, but there is no
reed of the third party. It’s essential
we have the two parties. Let us make our
demands on the two parties. It is wis
'Wm and true principle that demands a
ocognition of all good citizens. Let u9
make our demands on the Democratic
party and all will be safe.

Well, I guess that there will he plenty
rf hunting going on now in this section,
as Mr. L. H. Martin, Mr. John Lovell and
Mr. J. M. McKinney went out last Friday
and killed a deer and Saturday morning
they killed another, aud they think now
that they can just kill a deer any day and
ary where jusrins well as wine it is as
where it is not and they will, in all prob¬
ability, loose a great deal of time in the
woods on that account.
We are in great need of rain in this
section, as it has not rained here in near
three weeks.
There are two schools going on in this
section at this time.
We had a nice barbecue of the old fash
ior style last Wednesday at Blooming
Grove. All was peace and pleasure, aud
plenty to eat and lots of it left. Why
can’t people meet at all times and parts
’3 peace like that? It is much the best
and more pleasant to all. There is no
’-cal satisfaction in rowing and fussing
for any one, aud no credit either.

THE THIRD PARTY MOVEMENT.
What use have we for a third party?
What is tho object of the third party 1 ,
What is the difference between thou plat
form and the platform of the Democratic
party? Let us.examine these questions.
Firstly. Have wc any use, or call fora
third party? The answer is, no we have
not. Either of the old parties understand
what is needed for onr welfare, and if
they will not act in our interest, how can
wo expect a third party, who must nec
essarially be composod of democrats and
republicans, who have always been op¬
posed to each, other, to legislate in our
favor? Will joining the third party make
a democrat any the less a democrat, or a
republican any the less a republican?
Can tbe leopard change his spots? Will
the third party cause a man to change
his ideas or principles? Do they expect
to bring those opposing factions togeth¬
er and combine them into one haruioui
ous faction? Let me say right here that
it never can bo done. The third party
under existing circumstances, can never
make a continued success.
Secondly; The object of tbe third party,
apparently, is to protect tbe laboring
class of people, and especially that farm¬
ers may be bettered. I say this is appa¬
rently tbe object, but tbe real object is to
enthrone in power a few political sore¬
heads, who can’t get into office as a dem¬
ocrat or republican. Another object
seems to be the passage of the “sub-treas¬
ury bill.” For this the Alliance is strong¬
ly in favor. Can't the Alliance see that
the sab-treasury is unconstitutional? aud
that if it were passed it would become
the heaviest burden the people have ever
had to bear? Can’t they see that this is
class legislation, therefore contrary to
Alliance principles? Some say it is not
contrary to Alliance principles, but I say
that the best of all the Alliance princi¬
ples is the one which declares, “equal
rights to all and special privileges to
none,” and as this sub-treasury, under
its provisions, could grant a warehouse
for the storage of produce to about one
third of the counties in the United States
granting a special privilege to the one
third at the expense of the other two
thirds, or protecting the strong at tho ex¬
pense of the weak. But more of this in
an other question.
Thirdly. Their platform, in the main,
is the platform of the great democratic
party. They declare against large land
grants to Corporations, nav »o does the
democrats. Did not Cleveland redeem
millions of acres that had been given
away? They declare against a protective
tariff. Who have fought a high tariff
system if the democrats have not? They
demand the free and unlimited coinage
of silver, aud have not the democrats de¬
manded the same? They demand that
the president and vico president, also U.
S. senators be elected by the direct vote
of the people; didn't a democratic house
try to have such a change made, aud were
defeated by a republican senate? lu all
this they do not differ from the democrat¬
ic party? But now we come to the main
difference, viz: The sub-treasury. As be¬
fore stated we regard it as unconstitu¬
tional, because the government has, uo
authority whatever to leud money to pri¬
vate individuals, Deither has it authority
to build warehouses for the storage of
produce. But suppose the hill should
become a law, what would be the result?
Well, it would require an immense
amount of money to build the warehous¬
es and to advance eighty per cent, of val¬
ue of produce. This sum must be made
up either by direct taxation or by a high
tariff. If the farmer, the heavy taxes
would be worse than the preseut condi
tion of things. If the latter it would be
impossible for them to secure the low
tariff which they demand. Auotker evil
resulting therefrom wouid be the varia¬
tions in the markets. When the produce
i6 stored away the business of our great
country would become stagnant, prices
would go up with a rush and then the
doors , of „ these , warehouses , would , , .
great ,
be opened, for the produce must be sold
:
to pay the eighty per cent, advanced upon .
it, and all this beiug cast upon the ne w
inflated markets they would collapse,
carrying to financial ruiji jpauy auhonest
busmens man and tunny a good linn.
Id
vest money. Money weald become
scarce, business would atop, ami many a
poor i, a if starved laboring man would be
thrown out of employment and have no
means of supporting his family
they see that "the cure is worse than the
disease?’’ Why farmers, there are then
sands of poor half-starved wretches, both
men and women in our cities who are now
being oppressed and ground down by the
iron heel of capitalists, who are doomed
to wear (he shackle of a terrible and an
accursed slavery. Oh, farmer, shall you
who have at least enough it eat and a
free access to the;pure air of heaven, help
help to snatch the miserable pittance,
which they now have away from them?
Will you, Cau you have the heart to make
their burdens heavier? When they cry
for bread will you give them a stone?
Shall you join in with the capitalist whom
you so heartily condemn, and help to
crush them down because they are weak¬
er than you? Do you desire to share the
awful curse of oppressing the poor until
the prophet Isaiah cries out, "why
grind ye the faces of the poor It does
seem to me that their miseries and op¬
pressions are already so great that it
would make the very angles weep to look
dowii upon them. It seems to me
such wrongs in this, a civilized and Chris¬
tian country, would bring down upon us
such a cuise from an indignant God that
would destroy us like Sodom Gomarah of
old. The strong always oppressing the
weak until we are compelled to acknowl¬
edge the truth of the poet’s saying,
“Man’s inhumanity to man makes count¬
less thousands mourn.”
Now, I leave off as I began, we have no
use for a third party. The third party
agrees nearly enough with the democratic
party to go with it heart and hand. It
would make their success more sure by
making a stronger party. When the dem¬
ocratic party declared in their platform
the very principles which the third party
now declare, why did they not ally them¬
selves with the democratic party and
help them to accomplish their aims?
Then, after getting power they should re¬
fuse to fulfill their promises. Then, and
not till then, would we have use for a
third party.
