CORRESPONDENCE. From Early, Floyd Co., C,a. Mu, Editor:— We have had a singular visitor. Sitting at our desk last Sunday evening about sundown we cast a look oat to the road and saw an old man tiav cling on a pair of crutahes and one leg. lie approached oorgateand called for us. We answered and ho came in. He had no coat nor baggage. We gave him a chair and welcome and lie at once entered into a pleasant and intelligent conversa¬ tion, except that he would occasionally refer to his commission to travel and post, and said that he had been traveling mid posting for thirty-seven years; that he first started out with a horse and bug¬ gy, and then on horseback, and seven years ago he was set afoot. Ho sat and talked intelligently till perhaps eleven o’clock, then he lay down and slept well till four, a. in., when he got up,saying lie had to go up towards the rivei and do some posting. He came back to breakfast after which ho asked information about directions, which we gave, and he moved on, leaving us Ids good wishes, which were reward enough. This poor old man has a mania that lie must travel and post. He says that lie has to jiost all fork roads and crossings. He goes up to a fork or cross and makes a cross mark with one of his crutches and then walks off fifty yards and makes an¬ other cross mark and so on all the roads and that is what lie calls posting. Some¬ times he will spend over halfday posting one place. He will laugh and enjoy the mistakes of people who think that he is crazy. He is confident that he has a com¬ mission from on high to travel and post. We are of the opinion that he fractured bis mind by hard studdy of the Bible, vying to fathom the deep prophesy of Vvzekiel. He is as well versed in Bible reading as any one we have ever heard talk. His name is Hampton Young. He is a Primitive Baptist. Simon Cordwood. Do not let other merchants palm off other preparations on you because they have not Plantation Chill Cure in stock. From the Christian Record, Reading, Pa, Ben Franklin once made the statment, ‘•Schools teach us the rudiments of lan¬ guage, but books teach us Iiow to think; therefore, no man is truly educated un ess ho is a reader of books.” Ben was right, but ho lived in an age when books were so scarce, comparatively speaking, that but little of the pernicious in litera¬ ture was tolerated. But in these days it is different. Your hoys thirst for a knowledge of the world, and if you don’t give them some wholesome reading to slake that thirst, they will get hold of cheap, sensational stories that will poi¬ son their minds and do them terrible in¬ jury. There is such a vast amount of this trashy stuff being poured into the market at tlie present time, that it is a relief to pick up a new book that is at once thrill¬ ing, romantic, wholesome, and true. Such a work is “Frootpvints of tlie World’s History,” tlie latest and greatest work of the two celebrated historians, John Clark Rid path and Wm. S. Bryan. These distinguished gentlemen, having won their laurels by independent writ¬ ings, have, co-operated on this work, and produced a gem “of the purest ray se¬ rene.” Ji is not a dry, uninteresting statement of the plain facts, but rather each of the most important events of his¬ tory has been taken up and described by a master of language, who holds the read¬ er cntraced as he wends his way along the path of history, following carefully in the footprints of progress. We are delighted with this superb vol¬ ume. Perfect in thought, superb in style, and magnificent in execution. The binding are sumptuous, as are also the many illustrations and colored plates. The 'publishers liavo rightly concluded that such a gem should have a rich set¬ ting. It is a valuable addition to literature. It is a book for the old as well as tlie young; the married as well as the single; the gay as well as the grave. Everybody will read it with equal eagerness and profit. It is sold only through agents, and the Publisher’s advertisement ap¬ pears in another column. Catarrh, neuralgia, rheumatism and most diseases originate from impure blood. Cleanse it, improve it, purify it with De Witt’s Sarsaparilla and health is restored, strength regained. Sold by Neill & Almou.
