The “late lamented” legislature is re¬
ceiving a great deol of criticism and sonio
“cussing” these days for raising the tax
rate. When you strike a man’s pocket
these hard times you hit close to his heart
—Cedartown Standard.
Over herein Haralson the thinms " some ’
what reversed. It is a great dca. , of
“cussing” and some criticism.
Work Is the Thing.
Col. Bob Ingersoll said to a young man
the other day: “Any man can be a fail
lawyer, if he has an ordinary amouut of
brains, and is willing to work.”
This remark applies to almost every
profession and industry. Application
concentrated energy—persistent work
will make a man successful and cause
him to be regarded r.s a genius.
Dickens summed up the whole business
in the word “attention.” He used to
tell young men that the secret of good
writing was attention. “Give the matter
your attention,” he said, “and you will
succeed.”
This is what Ingevsol means when he
speaks of the results of work. There is
no very great difference in the natural
mental capacity of the mass of mankind
The average man who has success al¬
ways in view, and works untiringly for it
will get there, unless extraordinary ob¬
stacles or misfortunes stand in his way.
The most successful financiers, merch¬
ants, artisans, farmers and professional
men started at the bottom of the ladder
and worked their way up.
It is true in the highest sense that
worth makes the man, but it is equally
true, in a strictly business sense, that
work makes the man.
Work is the thing, and when you be¬
gin it, follow the advice of Dickens, and
give it your attention.—Constitution.
Congressman Everett is at home sjiend
ing the holidays, recuperating from a se¬
vere attack of the grip. Congress adjourn¬
ed yesterday until January 5th, when
business will be resumed at the old stand
in Washington.
Speaker Crisp announced the Commit¬
tees of the House yesterday, and the
Gorgia Representatives are well cared
for. Turner is on the ways and means
committe, Blount chairman of foreign
affairs, Lester chairman of state do
partment expenditures, and is on rivers
and harbors, Livingston is on appropri¬
ations, Moses on agriculture, pensions
and accounts, Winn on private land and
war claims, and Col Everett gets good
assignments on the education committee
and levees and improvements of the Mis¬
sissippi river. Lawson takes the speak¬
er’s old place on tko elections committee
and on expenditures in the department
of Justice. Watson is on two good com¬
mutes, the militia and eleventh cen¬
sus.
State Lecturer Copeland gets a $1,200
position under the door-keeper of the
House.—Cedartown Standard.
A Little Girl’s Experience in A Lighthouse.
Mr. and Mrs. Loren Trescott are keep
rs of the G«v. Lighthouse at Sand Beach,
Mien, and are blessed with a daughter,
four years old. Last April she was tak¬
en down with Measles, followed with a
dreadful Cough and turning into a Fever.
Doctors at home and at Detroit treated
her, but in vain, she grew worse rapidly,
until she was a mere “handful of bones.”
Then she tried Dr. King’s Kew Discovey
and after tho use of two and a half bot
ties, was completely cured. They say Dr.
King’s Now Discovery is worth its weight
in gold, yet you may get a trial bottle free
