liis candidacy for re-ejection subject to
the action of the democratic party. Judge
Thomas during the past session of the
legislature was chairman of the commit¬
tee on education and a member of several
other important committees.
A large school building which belonged
the negroes was burned in LaGrange.
There was no insurance and the loss fails
heayy on the negroes. There had
been no fire in the building for the past
two or three days and from the hour it
it is general opinion that it was
work of an incendiary.
While William Bearden and James
Wilson, t wo tinners, were replacing some
shingles on the elevato” of the Nashville
warehouse and Elevator Company the
the beam on which they were standing
tilted and threw them to the ground, a

Some enterprising citizens, said to be
from Cincinnati, have been working the
old negroes of Chattanooga and vicinity
recently on the ex-slave pension racket,
and they got away from the city just in
time to escape arrest. They have been
collecting 25 and oO-cent pieces or what
they could get from old slaves, on the
plea that it was to be used in ‘buying”
congressmen to vote for the ex slave pen¬
law,” which they explain, is pend¬
and needing a few votes to become a
law. Several huudred dollars were ob¬
tained from these innocent old negroes

The moment war ,s declared says the
Toledo Blade, the squadron at Dry Tor
tu K as will be«in r ope * atoms. The heaviest ‘ lcs
vessels . will ... descend upon Havana, whilst
a crui8 e»-and two or three of the smaller
"ill invest Matures. The Asiatic
squadron will blockade Manilla, whilst
the Europen flotilla will invest Trubia
the great arsenal on the northen coast of’
Spain The place is absolutely undefen
ded, and would fall an easy prey.
While all this was happening, the
Spanish would not be idle by any means,
and New York would in all like hood
perience some lively times. New York
City being the richest in the country,
would naturally be the first to be attack¬
ed, and there would be a possibility of
the city being in ruins in a few hours—
aging the city in the slightest,
Immediately after the declaration of
hostilities, the President would issue an
order concentrating the militia of all the
states alonsg the Atlantic coast. A part
would be embarked oh transports and
shipped to some points in Mantanzas
province with a view to joining the insur¬
gents under Gomez, and then to attack¬
ing Havana in the south, whilst the fleet
assulted the north.
Of course the insurgents would double
their activity and would invest those
towns attacked by the navy. Unless the
unexpected happened, the war would be
over within sixty days.
There is, however, one more situation
to be considered. The hour that war is
declared, the Carlists would rise and
cause a revolution which would end in
the overthrow of Alfonso.
There can be no doubt of the Ultimate
outcome, for Spain is absolutely bank¬
rupt, while the United States has unlim¬
ited finaciitl resources. And eyen if Spain
should gain a temporary advancing at the
beginning, yet it would be only a ques¬
tion of days when Uncle Sam would
revenge the Maine’s sailors.
Quarterly Conference.
The next quarterly conference for the
Buchanan circuit will be at Buchanan 3d
Sunday and Saturday before in April. It
is important that all the members attend.
J. D. Turner, . u.
Mr. H. C. Ayres, of Little Creek, was
here one day this week with some very
fine beef for sale. It is no uncommon
thing to see him in town with a beef or
a fine dressed siioat for sale.
D. B, Head started out Monday
morning takiug the school census of this,
the 1143rd district. He found 94 between
ages of 6 and 18 living within the
limits of Buchanan.

It always occurs strange to me to
the populist press forever and
ly “cussing” the democratic party,
all sorts of ways in which our
legislators and congressmen sit up in
legislative halls in idleness and
money. They are continuously
fraud at the polls. After all their
atory reports against the democrats
have got enough gall to say that
Watson is a democrat. There is not
populist in Georgia that can prove
Tom is a democrat. Why do they

They do not “cuss” Tom. No, sirree!
Tom was half as smart as they say he
he would be thrice times as smart as

an honest vote, but Watson and his fol¬

contesting the election, and the
after the contest was that there were
more fraudulent votes cast by the
than by the democrats, hence Black
elected by a larger majority than he
thought he was. The pops have

pressed in convention.
It is useless, hut not out of place, to
say that 1 am a Democrat, and that 1
stand on the Chicago platform and en¬
dorse every declaration therein; and if 1
endorse more strongly any one part more
than another, it is that part which seeks
to revise our monetary system ami
wrench trom the hands of tyrannical op
pressors this Ameiiean government, that
should be one of, for, and hy the people,
instead of against them, and enact laws
that will open our mints to the free and
unlimited coinage of silver at the ratio
of 16 to 1.
I shall entei the race for the noinina

my claims, if I have any, and ask eon
sideratioi: at the hands of the party to
which I belong and discuss public ques
lions at such times and places as may
hereafter seem dcoirable; and if at any
rf- me the people or the candidates desire,
1 —( shall have no objection to joining any
all candidates in a friendly discussion
of any matter that may be of interest to
the people.
I do not think I am asking too in nek
for the south end of the district, when I
say that she has helped to fight the bat
ties always and tins is the first time she
has asked for promotion from the rank
of volunteer privates. While this is imt
alone sufficient, yet it is a fact that the
people should consider.
Very respectfully,
