NO ACCIDENT.
One of the Maine Divers so
States.
BLOWN UP BY TREACHERY
And the Court of Inquiry Will
. So Find.
Havana , via Key West, March
9.—The last link in the chain ot
circumstantial evidence prov
ing that the Maine did not
explode through any accident on
board has been forged by divers.
One of these nwn, who tor 15
days has been toiling und-r water,
stated pos’tively that sufficient
evid nee has been discovered in
the hull of the vessel to determine
whether or not it was an accident.
“It is not one or two things
which we have on which the decis
ion is based, but many,” he said.
We have determined beyond all
reasonable doubt whether the
cause was external or internal. ”
He was, however, true to his
oath, and refused to state what
the determination arrived at W’as.
There it no doubt, however, among
American citizens and officials in
Havana as to what this result is.
DISCOVERIES MADE PUBLIC.
During the time that the divers
have been at work nearly every
foot of the submerged portion of
the wreck has been gone over, and
enough of their discoveries have
been made public to warrant the
bdief that the verdict will be no
accident. The quest'on is no long
er one as to the na'ure of the ver
dict, but when it will be made
public.
It now only remains for the
b)ard to hear the concluding evi
dence of the divers and review
the stenographer’s transcript of
the evidence,
Blanco is thoroughly alarmed.
The volunteers have been protest
ing for some time against the
overtures being made by the an
ti nomists to the patriots. Among
these offers is one that new local
bodies of niilitii be formed
throughout the island.
This would necessarily mean the
disbandment and disarming of the
volunteers. In Havana alone the
latter number 14,000, while there
are but 8000 regular Spanish sol
diers in the city and many of
these sympathize with ft e volun
teers.
This combination, it is believed,
will hasten action by the Uni’ed
States, for should such an out
break occur the lives and property
of Americans woud be in great I
danger. Spain would really have
two civil wars on hand instead of
one.
IN CHURCH
An Aged Woman Robbed at
Evansville, Ind.
Evansville, Ind. March 9. Mjs.
Elizabeth Huff, 70, was robbed of
$865 while attending services at
the Trinity Catholic church 'ast
night. The woman’s pocket was
pich*d after the collection had
been taken, presumably by a
woman.
The police are in possession of
information which, if found to be
true, will lead to tne arrest of a
member of one of the leading fam-
I il ies of the city. __

THE WORK RUSHED
Navy Yard Order to Finish
The Newark
AND CANADIAN RIFLES
Bought by Parties Jn This
Government.
Portsmouth, Va., March 9.
The navy department wired
Commodore Farquhar, Cera
mandant of the Norfolk navy I
yards, in Portsmouth, that the
cruiser Newark must be ready
for Sea duty in 60 days. Yard
officials protested that 60 days
was insufficient, but they were
instructed to make a requisition
for everything essential to com
pleting the work in that time.
A large force of hands is en
gaged in clearing the bottom of
the monitor Puritan, and she is
expected to be ready for depart
ure this week. About 1600 ’men
are at work in the yard, the
largest force on the rolls since
1894. Work is pushed day and
night.
Enlistment goes on rapidly,
negroes and foreign born being
rejected. Among the recruits to
day are Robert W. Blair, son of
ex-Attorney General Blair ; Sam
uel Lackey, law student under
bis uncle, Judge Holbrook, and
Sidney Moore, a brilliant young
lawyer. Torpedoes are being laid
at night in the channel between
Fortress Monroe and the Rip
raps.
RIFLES BOUGHT,
Ottawa, Ont. , March 9. —All
the Snider, Enfield, Peabody
and other rifles now in store
here have been sold to parties
in the United States. The Sniders,
still in the possession of the
rural corps, will not be called in
until some system is devised to
allow the storing of the Lee En
fields in proper armories. There
are also in store at Quebec and
Montreal stands of Martini-Hen
ry rifles sufficient to arm 50,000
men which have never been in
use.
This rifle was supplanted in
the British army two vears ago

Too •
Much Knife!
The use of the surgeon’s knife is be
coming so general,' resulting fatally
in such a large number of cases, as to
occasion general alarm.
Mr. William Walpole, of Walshtown,
South Dakota, writes; “About

tny left eye a little blotch about the
size of a small pea.
It grew rapidly, and

ing of the many cures made by b. ».
S , I determined to give that medicine
a trial, and after I had taken it a few
days, the cancer became irritated and
began to discharge. This after aw lll ®
ceased, leaving a small scab which
finally dropped off, and only a healthy
little scar remained to mark the place
where the destroyer had held full sway.
A Real Blood Remedy.

toexpect an operation to cure it. S.b.Sj
