UP ATKINSON’S ADDRESS
Delivered in Summerville Two
Weeks Ago.
Capt. Cleghorn, one of the
most, public spirited men of
Summerville, was in the city to
day, and was interviewed by a
11 usller-Com merci al reporter on
the gubernatorial situation as ii
is in his town and county,
Capt. Cleghorn is an enthus
iastic Candler man, and natural
ly so, for he is an old comra e n
arms and fellow Confederate
soldier of the brave Pigeon
Roost plowboy.
Be has stood shoulder tt
shoulder v ; h the gallant old
hero and with him, bared his
bosom to the leaden mi. des an<;
walls of fire of a hostile foe.
Capt. Cleghorn and Col. Candler
wort members of the sa no bii -
ade, and after having known
Allen 1). Candler the soldier,
Capt. Cleghorn is naturally an
enthus'iastic Candler m in.
The reporter asked Captain
Clvgho: n about Chattooga, the
only county in the Seventh dis
trict that the most sanguine ,
Atkinson men hope to carry for
their railread commissioner can
didate.
“Why, said he, ‘‘Chattooga is
easily three to one for Candler [
and statements to the contrary)
are misleading,statements to the
effect that the county is' close
are simply humorous and never)
meant seriously by men who
make them outside of the coun
ty —they never make such n.sh
remarks when they are in Chat
tooga.”
A bout Railroad Commissionsr
Atkinson’s recent trip to Chat
tooga and his speech deliver, d
at Summerville, Capt Cleghorn
savs that Mr. Atkinson was
treated most courteously by ev
ery one. ‘‘But,” he added, “the
crowd was exceedingly small
and tlie speech was so cold th t
it failed to kindle any enthus-.
iasm and failed to make a sing’e ■
convert.
He spoke of Mr. Atkinson in
most respectful terms but was
posiiive that the judge was not
in it witii the wool hat boys of
old Chattooga.
Capt. Cleghorn left this after
noon for a business and pleasure
trip to Macon.
