PEEPERS GUILTY.
Sensational Ending o f Sensa
tional Trial.
FATHER AND TWO SONS
Fined and Sentenced to Uhain
gang at Dalton.
Dalton, Ga. April 21. —The last
chapter has closed in the famous
Dalton robbery cases. The book
is now sealed, never to be reopen
ed in the court of Whitfield coun
ty.
Last October, when sensations
were coming thick and fast, three
men who had been imp’icated in
robberies and buying stolen poods
from the Bohannon gang, 11 d the
state. These were Drew Peeples,
his brother, young Tom Peeples,
and L. Buckholtz.
Eight of thecar pirates were
sentenced te the penitentiary or
chaingang, their terms ranging
from one year to ten. Nine others
who were either convicted or who
plead guilty to receiving stolen
goods were fined from SSO to sl,-
000.
T. J. Peeples was convicted in
one case, but appealed to the su
preme court. That court granted
him a new trial. This spring bi»
two fugitive sons returned to Dal.
ton and when court opened lest
week with Judge A. W. Fite on
the bench, the courtroom was
t ronged. Drew Peeples went on
trial last Friday on the charge of
stealing nine bar els of syrup from
the Western & Atlantic railroad
depot here.
The testimony before the grand
jury showed that he and his broth
er went to the depot early one
morning and were admitted to the
warehouse by their father, who
was agent for the railroad compa
ny. The boys with the assistance
of their porter, Gip Arnold, rolled
out nine barrels of syrup belong
ing to Flemister & Riley, rival
grjcerj merchants. These barrels
were rolled across the street and
into the Peeples store, where they
were placed in the cellar The
Flemister & Riley marks were
scrap"d off and the firm sold the
syrup as their own.
Gip Arnold seemed to have for
gotten all about the transaction
when he was put on the witness
stand. The evidence was strongly
in favor of the defendant until
Judge Fite turned to the witness
and sharply commanded him
to tell tbe truth. This broke Ar
nold down and he proceeded to
gye all the circumstances of the
jobbery under tbe examination of
Solicitor General Maddox. This
paralyzed the defense and the jury
found Drew Peeples gui 11 y . Judge
Fite sentenced him to pay a fine
of S2OO and to serve three
months on the chaingang.
Yesterday morning the fath
eer’s case came up for a new
trial. Sixty jurors had been
summoned and every body was
eagerly waiting for more sensa
tions. Directly one came and it
was altogether different from
what was expected.
To the astonishment of every
' ody except those who knew
what was coming, the solicitor
general announced that each of
the defendants would consent to I
a verdict of guilty and verdicts'
were rendered accordingly.
Fite then sentenced T. J. Pee
ples, Drew Peeples and T. N
Peeples each to pay a fine of
S2OO and all costs, and to work
in the chaingang for three
months, and in default of pay
ment to work m the chaingang
twelve months.
He sentenced L. Buckholtz
who pleaded guilty to receiving
stolen goods, to pay a fine o!
SIOO and all costs and work in
the chaingang three months
and in default of payment t(
work in the chaingang twelve
months.
Tam Cartwright, forasimilai
offense, was sentenced to pay ;
fine of SSO and all costs and t<
work in the chaingang three
months, and in di fault of pay
ment to work in the chaingai g
twelve months.
The chain, ang sentences w< re
suspended in each case.
This cleared the docket of the
last of these cases.
In this connection mention
may be made of the good work
done by Sheriff Johnston and
Deputy and Night Marshal Han
nah, and also Special Agent
Connelly, of the Southern rail
way, who assisted in working
up the evidence and helped to
catch thecar robbers in the act.
He was the .first detective of all
who came here to break up the
gang who was able to ac
complish anything.
